I feel like this one suffered from being boring and a bit too calloused with its violence - when he should be scared, Percy quips like a Marvel hero and I didn't like it.
Not a lot of ADHD in this one, which felt inconsistent with first book.
Felt like it didn't have the surprising originality of the first book, which I guess is a consequence of the reveals having all been in the first book.
I liked the twist at the end and that it wasn't so sweet as the last one, which honestly ended in a "and then everybody clapped" kind of way and was a bit *too* happy for my liking....more

At it's heart, this was a cute, traditional, quite male YA novel. Nothing particularly wrong with that and I'd have loved it 25 years ago, but I'm afraid the hopeful boy became a disappointed man in the meantime.
As a person with ADHD, I don't know. I don't particularly feel in need of representation (whatever that means, now), but then when I had some, I did kind of enjoy it. It was nice so hear someone try to describe the feeling of ADHD from the point of view of the sufferer. I'm guessing, however, that Riordan himself does not have ADHD - because as well meaning as this is, it's also very shallow. I just don't know.
Coming back, I find myself upgrading it from 3 to 4 stars, because as much as I found wrong with it, I did enjoy it a lot and felt quite entertained. Like pulp for young people....more
