I tried this twice now and I'm calling it. I was already hit or miss with the original 5 books in the 'trilogy.' And this one is not giving me anything that I need.
I wondered how we would get from the end of book 5 to the beginning of this one, and while sort of interesting, I don't care to read more.
I liked how I did get to a part where Zaphod was back, but he doesn't read the same to me anymore....more

I don't think that this is the book's fault. It's mine.
I don't like the fact that one of the characters who will end up in the romance is already in a relationship (it's doomed to fail, we know this) at the start of the book. I know that this was in the synopsis, but another book that I read by the same publisher also had this (not in the synopsis, it was a surprise) and I realize that I sort of hate going into a romance where we have a character already in a relationship with the wrong character.
I also don't know if it is because this is the author's adult debut after they've only written YA, but I don't like that within the first chapter we are informed that a character has a sex backpack carrying all their sex stuff (including handcuffs, rope, and sex toys). We are informed that this is the bag that this character will use with the aforementioned (gonna be ex) girlfriend. This just felt like too much thrown to me when we don't know anything about the characters. I want a developed relationship before we get to the sexy stuff.
I was super into all of the LGBTQ+ characters, and that we were going to have a fake/green card marriage storyline. It felt very relevant to today. But everytime I think of sitting down to read this book I can't find it in me to do it. It started to put me in a reading slump, so I'm calling it for now.

I loved the idea of a continuation of Hansel and Gretel. A reimagining, if you will.
However, I'm bored. DNF at 52%
I really really tried with this one.
I loved the idea of a continuation of Hansel and Gretel. A reimagining, if you will.
However, I'm bored. I'm over 1/2 way in and nothing has really happened. The writing is taking forever. I'm sure it's beautiful, but that's not a big deal for me. I don't feel any connection to the characters. And the fantasy aspects and very few. This feels more like a historical story right now because they keep mentioning a war that has been happening. And not even a fantasy one.

I have read some of Rebecca Royce's other books, most especially her Wings of Artemis Series, and other RH books, and I really liked them. I feel that Rebecca Royce, normally, is a great storyteller with interesting plots and amazing characters. However, I feel that these were the things that failed, for me, in this story.
I DNF'ed this book at around 50%. Nothing was really happening and the timeline in the story had only taken about 24-48 hours. For a book that was halfway over, I would have expected something significant to happen plot-wise. Now, I know that this has been called the first book in a serial, but at almost 200 pages (basically a novella), I still expect to see more happening than the main character meeting the guys.
Something that usually makes a Rebecca Royce book stand out to me is her characters; however, I felt that all of them were a bit flat. I did not connect to any of them, and I felt that the dialogue and the main character's thoughts were repetitive.
I have loved others of her books, and I am still planning on reading others, especially the Wings of Artemis series, but this book did not live up to my expectations.

The writing is good and I was really lookin forward to a fantasy/fae Cinderella retelling. However, I didn’t really like that the characters met, knew each other, and fell in love previous to the book. Then, everything seems to be happening because of a magical miscommunication, but a miscommunication none the less.

I absolutely loved The Space Between Worlds. It was my favorite book the year it came out.
However, I did not like this one. I did not like the narrative voice. I did not understand what was going on (in plot or character relations). I usually can forgive a lot of the plot if I care about the characters. But here I wasn't.
I also don't see how this connects to the first book. Maybe this should have been a standalone because I came in with expectations that were not met. I really wanted to try more with this, but it took me a few days to read the first 100 pages, and I keep avoiding picking it back up.
I know that the author's note said that this was a book that was written to express her anger, which is very valid, but I just don't think that this is doing what I thought it was going to.

I really loved the concept of fairytales meets John Tucker Must Die. But I will say that the second half of that comparison hasn't felt like it really started yet and I got halfway through.
I was super curious about this when I started reading, and I did like that the princesses were based on ones that we know, but they never felt fully formed.
I also didn't like that Roland has such horrible descriptors. It felt like he was belittled and beaten down for no reason. And to make it worse, there was another mention of people who were disabled, but a slur was used.
I wanted to give this book one more chance, but nothing is really happening, and I woke up this morning knowing that I just couldn't finish.
