“Water continued to explain about the life of the tree. “Trees can be as big below the ground as they are above it. And there are mother trees in the forests—these are the oldest trees. They have the most connections with the other trees. Trees communicate with each other and look after the young trees by sending them nutrients through their roots.”

“I have a question for you Water. What happens to the water in my body if I get angry at someone or if someone gets angry with me?”
“A very good question,” said Water. “In either case, the water in your body gets upset and causes you to not feel very well. You feel sad, or maybe you will cry. Crying is good because it puts good endorphins into your body, and you will start to feel better. They help the water in your body to recover.”

“Mycelium?” Joey asked. “What is that?”
Water explained, “It is a huge organism made up of very, very small fibres or filaments of fungus. The fungus grows underground, and it connects all the roots of the trees together. Its flower is a mushroom. Do you like to eat mushrooms?”

“And Joey loved the sound of the water flowing in the stream. He liked to listen to the water gurgle over the stones and the loud splash of the waterfall.
He enjoyed lying on his back and looking up at the sky through the leaves on the trees. It was so nice to lie in the cool shade on a hot summer’s day listening to the bees buzzing and the birds singing. It was beautiful.”

“Water suddenly remembered their prior visit and questioned, “What was I saying when you left so abruptly? Oh yes, I was telling you that I was alive and sentient. I was going to explain to you that everything is alive. Everything is connected: you, me, the trees, the plants, the soil, and the rocks. Everything!
Do you know how much of you is made up of me?”

“Joey was quiet as he listened. He didn’t know what to think or say. First, he still couldn’t get over the fact that Water was talking to him. And, if what Water was telling him was true, it was amazing!”
