I always wanted to be a writer and I believe I was born to write the books I am writing. But it can be a lonely, frustrating and depressing existence. The romance of a writer's life is quite different from the reality.

That being said, I think the best thing for me is that it allows me to make sense of what seems to be a chaotic and confusing world.(less)

That's funny. I actually have a course on this very thing. Here is a free coupon for anyone having this problem https://goo.gl/dcBBnj

The short answer is I don't.

The slightly longer answer is I prepare ahead of time. I think that sometimes writer's block is due to feeling overwhelmed. If you prepare ahead of time gathering notes on description, dialogue etc. You will know what you want to do and won't be overwhelmed. You wouldn't start cooking without having all the ingredients out would you?

The other thing I do is give up and quit writing.

I discovered years ago that, when I had a problem I was trying to overcome, if I stopped writing the answer would magically appear to me a few days, weeks, moths later without my trying.

This is what the Taoists call Wu wei, the action of non action.

Basically what you are doing is planting the seed (the problem that your conscious mind can't solve) into your unconscious mind. Einstein said that a problem that was caused at one level of consciousness can not be solved at the same level of consciousness. This is true of everything.

Don't let it get you down. Go mow the lawn and the answer will come to you.(less)

The Vagabond King

I'm currently working on a different cover for my novel The Vagabond King and thought I'd take the opportunity to share one of my favorite excerpts:

“This is not the first time that this ever happened,” he said, hunched like a troll in his stained undershirt. The sweet smell of his cigarette smoke uncoiled through the kitchen. “Just the first time it is happening to you.”

“Thrown from my secure life, whether by chance or the Powers That Be, I was sitting on a skipping stone and it was fear, not confidence, that was increasing with the ripples of uncertainty. Mine had become a world without center.”
James Campion Conway, The Vagabond King: A coming of age story

“The morning after my mother’s death, I was surprised to see the sunrise. From behind the curtain of my bedroom window I was surprised to see the people leave their homes and begin the day. Downstairs, the hands of the grandfather clock continued to tick, marking each passing hour with a chime that echoed over the black and white chessboard tiles of the front hall. I was surprised to see the mail come at the same time as the day before and, later that evening, the sun set once more as it did since the beginning of time. My mother’s death did not disturb the planets in their courses. And, though everything kept moving like she never existed at all, my world erupted into chaos until the universe swirled around me like a whirlpool of scattering stars.”
James Campion Conway, The Vagabond King: A coming of age story

“This is the fairytale of my life, the mythology of my existence, and, as I only have one story to tell, there is only one way to tell it. You may find it a little melodramatic at moments and you may not like who I was at times. But, princes frequently start out as frogs and, perhaps, by the time I reach my end, you will understand why. And so, as we all must have a beginning, a middle and an end, I will start at the beginning.
Once upon a time...”

“When you are on your path, and it is truly your path, doors will open for you where there were no doors for someone else.”
Joseph Campbell

“Furthermore, we have not even to risk the adventure alone; for the heroes of all time have gone before us; the labyrinth is thoroughly known; we have only to follow the thread of the hero-path. And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god; where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves; where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence; and where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.”
