Vincent H. O’Neil is the Malice Award-winning author of the Exile mystery series from St. Martin's Press and the military science fiction Sim War series (writing as Henry V. O'Neil) from HarperCollins.

He is also the author of the theater-themed murder mystery DEATH TROUPE, and two books in a New England-based horror series, INTERLANDS and DENIZENS.

Most recently, he released an innovative news series that pairs a futuristic fiction novel with a non-fiction book.

The novel, A PAUSE IN THE PERPETUAL ROTATION, describes a future United States where people are embracing an underground philosophy called The Unused Path. The non-fiction book, THE UNUSED PATH, is a genuine self-improvement / life philosophy manual that is featured extensively in t

I'm re-reading Ernest Hemingway's A Moveable Feast, and he had a marvelous observation about the times when his writing wasn't flowing:

"But sometimes when I was starting a new story and I could not get it going, I would sit in front of the fire and squeeze the peel of the little oranges into the edge of the flame and watch the sputter of blue that they made.

I would stand and look out over the roofs of Paris and think, "Do not worry. You have always written before and you will write now. All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know."

So finally I would write one true sentence, and then go on from there."

As always with Hemingway, I'm not exactly sure what he was saying. But I do follow the simple practice of taking a single idea, scene, or line that interests me and then wrapping words around it. That's how I keep going when the writing is difficult. (less)

I adopted that as my approach, and ever since then I see ideas for stories all around me.

Sometimes it's just a neat turn of phrase I heard someone say, and when I was turning it over in my mind the phrase raised a couple of "what if" questions that then transformed into stories. Other times it's something I see happening that, if it changed just a little, would make for the beginning of a very interesting tale.

The ideas are all around us, and it's up to each storyteller to decide what helps him or her to see those ideas. (less)

Lawrence in Arabia by Scott Anderson
“From what the Oxford scholar [TE Lawrence] had seen, military culture was a world of hidebound careerists looking for a knighthood or their next medal, and of underlings loath to question the powerful, with countless thousands dying as a result.”

Lawrence in Arabia by Scott Anderson
“Thus among the warring states in Europe at the end of 1915 it was no longer a matter of satisfying what had brought them into the conflict in the first place—and in many cases, those reasons had been shockingly trivial—but to expand beyond them, the acceptable terms for peace not lowered, but raised. This conflict was no longer about playing for small advantage against one’s imperial rivals, but about hobbling them forever, ensuring that they might never again have the capability to wage such a devastating and pointless war.”

“Actors are all about entrances, but writers are all about exits.”
Vincent H. O'Neil, Death Troupe

“That's what I love most about writers--they're such lousy actors.”
Vincent H. O'Neil, Death Troupe

“Manipulation gets people to do something they aren't likely to do if given the opportunity to think.

Appeals to emotion are some of the easiest methods of manipulation, because strong emotions can cloud our minds while also getting us to act.”

“If they didn't want to know, they shouldn't have asked.”
James Webb, Fields of Fire

“The night is the hardest time to be alive and 4am knows all my secrets.”
Poppy Z. Brite

“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.”
J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye

“I rested my head on the wall behind me and closed my eyes, wishing my life had a button: Ignore All.”
Rachel Brady, Final Approach

“The words of his various writing instructors and professional mentors over the years came back to him at times like these, and he found a new understanding in their advice: Writing is rewriting. The rough draft is just that. You can’t polish what you haven’t written.

Things that made for a normal life—like a daily routine that followed the sun—took a back seat to times like these, and he exulted in that change because it served as proof that his writing was indeed the most important thing in his life. It wasn’t a conscious choice on his part, like deciding to repaint the bathroom or go buy the groceries, but an overarching reallocation of his existence that was as undeniable as breathing. Day turned into night, breakfast turned into dinner, and the laptop or the writing tablet beckoned even when he was asleep.

He would often awake with a new idea—as if he’d merely been on a break and not unconscious—and he would see the empty seat before the desk not as his station in some pointless assembly line, but as the pilot’s seat in a ship that could go anywhere.”
