Clark T. Carlton is an award winning novelist and playwright and has worked as a journalist, screen and television writer, and as a producer of so-called reality television. He was born in the South, grew up in the East, went to school in the North and lives with his family in the West. As a child he spent hours observing ants and their wars and pondered their similarity to human societies.

He was a cattle rancher who was married three times and apparently he was a very difficult husband and a terrible father to my dad. When we were growing up, my father told me that this mother died when he was seven years old. Years later, we learned my grandmother was very much alive and when my dad was in his fifties, he was still getting a yearly birthday card from her with a five dollar bill in it, as if he were still a little boy. We learned her name was Alma and she wanted to visit our family after we moved to California in hopes of meeting her grandchildren. My father never answered her letters and to the very end of his life he refused to answer any questions about her.

I likely will never know why my dad wanted nothing to do with his mother, my grandmother. My guess is that she abandoned him to my grandfather who I know was a terrible parent, an illiterate and violent man who left my dad alone for weeks at a time when he was a small child and refused to enroll him in school until he was eight years old.

Some dark, terrible story is there and it's set in what is called "Old Florida" near the Gulf Coast when it was a very Southern state and a rural backwater. It's strange not to know someone with whom I share 1/4 of my DNA. (less)

“No idol, book, word, place or relic should ever be held sacred. Only human life is sacred.”
Clark Thomas Carlton, Prophets of the Ghost Ants

Topics Mentioning This Author

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
Frank Herbert, Dune

“Conservatism is not about tradition and morality, hasn't been for many decades... It is about the putative biological and spiritual superiority of the wealthy.”
Greg Bear

“Fat’ is usually the first insult a girl throws at another girl when she wants to hurt her.

I mean, is ‘fat’ really the worst thing a human being can be? Is ‘fat’ worse than ‘vindictive’, ‘jealous’, ‘shallow’, ‘vain’, ‘boring’ or ‘cruel’? Not to me; but then, you might retort, what do I know about the pressure to be skinny? I’m not in the business of being judged on my looks, what with being a writer and earning my living by using my brain…

I went to the British Book Awards that evening. After the award ceremony I bumped into a woman I hadn’t seen for nearly three years. The first thing she said to me? ‘You’ve lost a lot of weight since the last time I saw you!’

‘Well,’ I said, slightly nonplussed, ‘the last time you saw me I’d just had a baby.’

What I felt like saying was, ‘I’ve produced my third child and my sixth novel since I last saw you. Aren’t either of those things more important, more interesting, than my size?’ But no – my waist looked smaller! Forget the kid and the book: finally, something to celebrate!

I’ve got two daughters who will have to make their way in this skinny-obsessed world, and it worries me, because I don’t want them to be empty-headed, self-obsessed, emaciated clones; I’d rather they were independent, interesting, idealistic, kind, opinionated, original, funny – a thousand things, before ‘thin’. And frankly, I’d rather they didn’t give a gust of stinking chihuahua flatulence whether the woman standing next to them has fleshier knees than they do. Let my girls be Hermiones, rather than Pansy Parkinsons.”
J.K. Rowling

“I'm quite illiterate, but I read a lot. ”
J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye

“Hatred is self-punishment. Do you think they're feeling bad because you hate them?”
Michelle Cohen Corasanti, The Almond Tree
