"(4.4) Turgenev. We all know Dostoyevsky, we all know Tolstoy, we all know Chekhov, some know Pasternak, Gogol and Goncharov, but Turganev...he is and was an outlier to me. "Fathers and Children" or as I had known over the years as "Fathers and Sons" " Read more of this review »

“Don't you think it's rather nice to think that we're in a book that God's writing? If I were writing the book, I might make mistakes. But God knows how to make the story end just right—in the way that's best for us.”

Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
Kurt Vonnegut

Jorge Luis Borges
“I am not sure that I exist, actually. I am all the writers that I have read, all the people that I have met, all the women that I have loved; all the cities I have visited.”
Jorge Luis Borges

Virginia Woolf
“I am reading six books at once, the only way of reading; since, as you will agree, one book is only a single unaccompanied note, and to get the full sound, one needs ten others at the same time.”
Virginia Woolf, The Letters of Virginia Woolf: Volume Three, 1923-1928

J.G. Ballard
“Civilised life, you know, is based on a huge number of illusions in which we all collaborate willingly. The trouble is we forget after a while that they are illusions and we are deeply shocked when reality is torn down around us.”
J.G. Ballard

Andre Dubus
“I love short stories because I believe they are the way we live. They are what our friends tell us, in their pain and joy, their passion and rage, their yearning and their cry against injustice.”
Andre Dubus

Brian I have a favor to ask of my Goodreads librarian friends - can you please add The Believer Issue #140 to the database?

Many thanks in advance!

message 82: by Seemita

Seemita Thanks for the friend invite and kind words, Brian. I have also seen your updates often courtesy common friends and glad to finally connect! Looking forward to chatting books with you.

Brian I wonder how much research the marketing geniuses behind the new vodka Blue Ice performed before coming up with that name. Maybe it's just me, but I would think that any product name (especially one you ingest) that had the potential of conjuring negative images would go immediately to the "no" pile.

message 80: by [P]

[P] Hey Brian, thanks for the friend request, and the thoughtful words accompanying it. Happy to accept. Hopefully it'll be worthwhile having me around.

I read many wonderful fiction books in 2014, Memoirs of Hadrian being the one which left me most in awe.

Brian It has just become 2015 here in Thailand, so I just wanted to say Happy 2015 to all of you wonderful friends.

If it isn't too much to ask, I'd love to know your favorite fiction and non-fiction read of 2014. My favorite fiction reads were Ulysses and State of Grace; my non-fiction bests were Volume 3 of Rising Up and Rising Down and The 900 Days: The Siege of Leningrad.

Here's to a fabulous year of reading in 2015!
