Or else it's because I don't have enough information about the scene I am about to write to believe in it. Research helps with that. (Although I can go on researching forever.)

Since actually writing something is the only way out of writer's block, I find that taking a notebook to a park or to my backyard or even onto the subway and writing a few pages there, rather than on my computer can help. Actually opening the file I'm working on helps, too, but that's the hardest part! Sometimes I take my computer to a coffee shop: I seem to be able to get to work in public more easily than at home, where there are so many distractions.

What I have to do is to remind myself that it's only when I'm looking at the writing from the outside that I have trouble, and that once I start I'll be fine. (I'm also writing a book called In Defense of Procrastination so I consider all my writer's blocks to be research for that book. ;) )(less)

A Very Small Essay (1)

One of the lifeguards at our community centre pool, who I’d estimate to be in his mid-twenties, sometimes joins in with our aquafit class from the pool deck while he’s also watching to make sure we don’t drown. We have often been amused and heartened by his efforts to lift one leg, stand on one foot, and do jumping jacks on dry land along with those of us (mostly elderly folk) who are doing the ex

Paul Clayton "What am I doing here?" I feel the same, Mary, sometimes. With all I have to do... But it is a neat site for book worms such as myself. And, nice to be friended, as they say, by a fellow book worm.

Mary W. Walters What am I doing here? I can't keep up with facebook and twitter (not that I try to "keep up" but do like to check in to those places and sometimes hang out) and I'm buried in freelance work at the moment (not complaining about that, either). Someday I'll get started here. Soon I hope. Thanks for the welcome.
