Bev Spicer has been writing full-time for eight years, from her crumbly Charentaise house in France. In a past life she gained a degree in English and French Literature (Keele University) and a PGCE in English methods (Queens' College, Cambridge).

She has lived in Bridgnorth, Cambridge, Rethymnon (Crete), Mahe (Seychelles), and now lives in Charente Maritime with her husband and youngest son. The next place she wants to explore is probably Spain. Her husband is very tolerant, and secretly enjoys chaos.

Bev has been a teacher, blackjack dealer for Playboy, examiner for Cambridge ESOL, secretary (various sorts - most boringly 'legal'), lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University, and a Sunday checkout girl for Tesco (who allowed her to deliver surplus

Excerpt from My Grandfather's Eyes:

Lizzy gets married at a registry office, in the summer before my own wedding, and I am invited to attend, as I knew I would be. She is stronger than me, or else she does not feel the pain I feel.  “You have to come, Al.  Promise you will!”  She knows I will do whatever she asks.
It is the final day of our camping trip to Thetford forest.  The holiday has been Read more of this blog post »

S.P. Harrison “Age takes us by surprise” (Goethe)

One minute she is nicking apples from the next door neighbour’s apple tree aged about 7 and a half and now she is a 60 year old woman. How did that happen?
Part memoir and part social history, this is the story of a girl who went from living in a council house to becoming the partner of a Queen’s Counsel. Told in chronological order, her life events are recounted with a mixture of wry humour, bitter resentment and savvy observation. It is a tale narrated alongside some of the significant political and social events of the time, from the 1950s to the present day.
Now a 60 year old woman, she takes a size 10 in clothes. She drinks a lot of Shiraz. She wears killer heels, a leather biker jacket and skinny jeans. She rocks out with her mates in nightclubs and she goes to rock and roll concerts; she is an aging rock chick.
This is the story about how an ordinary woman’s life has been lived; about the good times, the bad times and the crazy times. It is those experiences that ultimately shape us and it is those experiences that have a story to tell.
“A bird does not sing because it has an answer; it sings because it has a song to sing.”
(Chinese proverb)
I AM A 60 YEAR OLD WOMAN: HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?

A book to make you laugh out loud and a book to make you cry.
