"At last I have finished the first part of The City and Its Uncertain Walls, and I think I am now able to dispense with my reflections. Reading the first chapter immediately made me think of Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. Now, after reading all 26 chapters, the entire first section, I must admit, there is not one thing new here. Everything that I've read feels like something I've seen before. /1" 07 jan. 2025 09:09

William Faulkner
“Father said it used to be a gentleman was known by his books, nowadays he is known by the ones he has not returned.”
William Faulkner, The Sound and the Fury

William Faulkner
“Read, read, read. Read everything -- trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You'll absorb it.
Then write. If it's good, you'll find out. If it's not, throw it out of the window.”
William Faulkner

Haruki Murakami
“You know what I think?" she says. "That people's memories are maybe the fuel they burn to stay alive. Whether those memories have any actual importance or not, it doesn't matter as far as the maintenance of life is concerned. They're all just fuel. Advertising fillers in the newspaper, philosophy books, dirty pictures in a magazine, a bundle of ten-thousand-yen bills: when you feed 'em to the fire, they're all just paper. The fire isn't thinking 'Oh, this is Kant,' or 'Oh, this is the Yomiuri evening edition,' or 'Nice tits,' while it burns. To the fire, they're nothing but scraps of paper. It's the exact same thing. Important memories, not-so-important memories, totally useless memories: there's no distinction--they're all just fuel.”
Haruki Murakami, After Dark

Frank Zappa
“So many books, so little time.”
Frank Zappa

Ernest Hemingway
“Is dying hard, Daddy?
No, I think it's pretty easy, Nick. It all depends.”
Ernest Hemingway
