The author herself has said that it’s a hard one to explain, as it covers multiple storylines, genres and timelines in history. It features real historical figures, alongside made up characters, but the crux of the story is a meeting between a 1945 nurse – Claire Randall – and an 18th Century Highlander – Jamie Fraser – through the magic of time travel.

It does sound bizarre I will grant you, but it has a way of sucking you into the story that you’ll be hooked in an instant. I’m not going to go into the storylines of the other seven main books – but what I will say is that there have definitely been points in the later books where I’ve felt the author has a tendency to waffle a bit. I’ve felt at times that she needed a much sterner editor. But one thing I absolutely cannot fault is her characterisation. Her characters are works of art. And they are the things that will capture you about this story and not let you go.

Claire – our beautiful heroine Claire. What can I even say about her? She’s stubborn, and brave, and opinionated, and flung back into a time when it’s not a woman’s place to be any of those things. Luckily she meets a man who values those things in her character, and while he’s also stubborn, he’s kind, and loyal, and modern for a man of his era. They are surrounded by equally real feeling characters that you come to know, and love, and miss when Mrs Gabaldon eventually kills them off one by one. And before you know it there is a whole world of people that feel so real you feel like you’ve become part of the Fraser clan yourself.

Despite the book being 30 years old (oh God I am OLD), I am not going to go into spoiler territory with this. All you need to know is that Claire and Jamie’s story will capture your imagination, your heart, and your very soul, and you’ll never be quite the same again. It’s a book that has adventure, intrigue, love, war, heroes, villains (yes sadly, there is rape involved for those triggered by sexual assault), family, and history, all set against the backdrop of the beautiful Scottish highlands. I don’t know what more you could possibly want from a book. If you’re the kind of person who likes to get lost in the pages of a novel then this is the book for you.

I honestly cannot recommend this book highly enough. And while yes, some of the later ones have their problematic areas (slavery and indigenous people are both a big feature in book four – and due to when the books were written they are not written about in all that kindly terms), it’s still a series I would recommend too. I found that the story dulled for me around the book five/six mark, but I loved the last book and am very much looking forward to the release of book nine (fingers crossed for later this year or early 2022). And if you’re looking for ways to be accountable for reading them then you’re not too late to join the Outlander Book Club (outlanderbookclub.com)! You’ll have some catching up to do but we’ve not finished book 2 yet so I still think you could catch up in your own time!
