Before oil was found in Texas, the state’s largest mineral export was bat guano. One hundred pounds of bat guano could be turned into four pounds of saltpeter, a key ingredient in gunpowder. During the American Civil War, more than 2,500 pounds of bat guano were shoveled out of Texas caves every day.
