20th Century Studios Home Entertainment and Disney will celebrate the 35th anniversary of Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands (1990) with a new 4K Blu-ray SteelBook release, which is scheduled to arrive on the market on October 28th.
Description: Once upon a time, a kindly inventor created a charming young man named Edward. But the inventor died before he finished Edward, who had sharp metal shears for hands. Edward was sad and alone until a kind Avon lady invited him to live with her family in the fantastical land of Suburbia.
Lovingly restored for its 35th anniversary, every sparkle of Edward's eyes and every glint of his blades now shines with breathtaking clarity, enhanced by Dolby Vision and accompanied by cutting-edge Dolby Atmos sound. First released in 1990, the film has carved a permanent place in the hearts of fans of Burton, Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder and Danny Elfman for decades, and is now presented more vividly than ever before.
Edward Scissorhands remains one of cinema's most enchanting modern fables. A kindly inventor once created a gentle young man named Edward, but passed away before he could finish his work – leaving Edward with only metal shears for hands. Lonely until welcomed into a pastel suburbia by a kind Avon lady, Edward's story still resonates today with its timeless message: to embrace what makes us different, and to discover that wonder often lies just beyond the unknown.
For collectors and fans, a hauntingly beautiful SteelBook encases the classic film. The exterior features striking artwork, with Kim's face reflected in shattered glass on the front and a detailed close-up of Edward's compelling gaze on the back. The interior reveals a captivating illustration of a gothic Edward in all his leathered, studded and bladed glory. This limited-edition set includes both the 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray discs, making it a must-have for any enthusiast.
Special Features and Technical Specs:
- NEW 4K RESTORATION OF THE FILM
- DOLBY VISION/HDR PRESENTATION OF THE FILM
- DOLBY ATMOS AUDIO TRACK
- Featurette – Peek behind the scenes and hear the cast & crew of Edward Scissorhands discuss Burton's unique, modern reinterpretation of Frankenstein
- Audio Commentary by Director Tim Burton
- Audio Commentary by Composer Danny Elfman
- Optional English SDH, Spanish and French subtitles

This movie terrified me as a child, and I’ve honestly never been able to get over it. It always weirded me out for some reason. On the bright side, the steelbook is lovely!

Sadly for Blu-ray-only players, the included disc appears to be the same one already available. I'm happy to upgrade to the 4K disc and Atmos track myself.

What @LMFAObros said. As much as I'd love to upgrade (I still have the ancient DVD), importing the steelbook will cost AUD$70-100. Up to me to decide if it's worth it to me, I guess...

Wow if done properly in 4k this should be excellent. Great movie and soundtrack. Thumbs up to Disney for yet another 4k catalog title to follow The Sound of Music. Keep the Fox catalog coming Disney.

As usual no Aussie release for anything owned by Disney. I have purchased a few from the UK recently Kingdom of Heaven, Master & Commander and the two Tron steelbooks but may wait to see what the reviews are for this.

I look forward to getting this sometime next year, once the scalper market has had its fill. If I had any sense, I would probably wait at least a year before even looking. It's just not worth jumping through hoops to pay full price for an order that might get cancelled anyway or backordered for months, because Disney has decided that they no longer care about their most ardent and most profitable fans (collectors) for something that can't even be replaced if it arrives defective or damaged due to the grotesquely inadequate packaging that ALL major distributors try to get by with these days.

I'm certainly tired of these steelbook-only releases, as much as I love the individual steels themselves (for the most part). When did giving consumers purchasing choices become a bad thing? They're leaving a bit of money on the table by excluding those who prefer regular cases.
I'm really hoping that Disney/Sony at least prints an adequate amount of steelbooks for this title, unlike "TRON", "TRON: Legacy", "Master and Commander", "Kingdom of Heaven", and just about every other Disney-owned catalogue title that's gotten a steelbook release in the past year or so.
As for the film itself, I've actually never seen it but I do own the 25th anniversary steelbook, and it's quite lovely. I've been meaning to give it a watch for a long while. I think I'll finally pull the trigger this year and watch the copy I currently own!

Day One. This is a very dark movie, I'm honestly not the biggest fan of it, but it's still a must-buy, if for no other reason to support the Fox catalog, catalog discs in general, and to show Disney that this is what we truly want them to work on.
Dak017 So far, Beetlejuice (original) and The Nightmare Before Christmas have been good, but could be better. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was perfect, but I honestly give perfect discs of newer movies lower regard, since it's pretty easy to ace a new movie, versus an old one that needs to be properly restored first. I have Sleepy Hollow, but somehow I've never watched it or even opened it. The two Batman movies though, those are unmitigated disasters on 4K, and they need to be redone.

@ Shane Rollins: I agree! We need to support the Fox catalog, catalog discs in general, AND show Disney (or Sony) that we want our movies on 4K.
I know that a lot of people hate Steelbooks -- and I get it -- but I think that they are cool. Still, GIVE US A CHOICE! Release TWO versions of each release: standard and Steelbook.

I had been hoping this would get a 4K UHD release, but another steelbook only release. It's great for the folks who collect them and want to spend that kind of money, but a standard release for the consumers who are on a tighter budget or just prefer to spend less would be nice.

I won’t gripe too much about how this new release has legacy extras but not new extras. What matters is that with Disney partnering with Sony, a lot of the Fox, Touchstone and Hollywood titles are getting physical releases again and the only thing that will keep it going is the support. So all I can do is give this release big support so they can keep up with doing that, no matter how big or small the release is.
I’m still angling for a surprise 35th anniversary release of Dick Tracy but that’s just me.

1. I too hope they do an SE of this and their other films, since the SB-only bit is losing more purchases than it's banking, on this film and others, at Disney and the other five, at the Big Six and the boutiques. LE/UCE/SB only does not make people happy.
2. Coligion There's a picture of the disc up there, and while I don't know which is which, simply googling both old Blu-rays will give you the answer.
3. This is one of maybe only ten discs total - across laserdisc, DVD, HD DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K - where the film had its original three-track or four-track mix presented in a discrete 3.0 or 4.0 mix. This is extremely rare. Ironically though, though this disc has the original 4/2/4 Dolby Stereo track in lossless 4.0, it also manages to be one of the many, many, many, many, many discs to only have the "lesser track/fallback track" included, as the "main track", CDS 5.1, is missing off both Blu-rays, the 4K, and every DVD I've owned.

With due respect to Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Tim Burton, and Danny Elfman, this is my personal favorite from everything they've done in their careers. It works for watching at both Halloween, Christmas, or even the summer since most of the film seems to take place there.

Crazy Old Wizard I second Ed Wood. It's great. Black and white films look great on 4K, and even better with DV, so Ed Wood on 4K would be legendary. I would definitely pick it up, if it ever arrived on 4K. But I predict there would be some major special features lag, so we'd probably have to hold on to our old copies of that one.

> "Dolby Vision should be the standard (take note Disney)"
I mean, it think it is the standard for Disney at this point? At least since last year. Moana 2 had Dolby Vision, Elio had Dolby Vision, Lilo & Stitch had Dolby Vision and now The Sound of Music also has Dolby Vision.

Oct 03, 2025
1. While there's no denying that Dolby Vision is the best, standard HDR, HDR10, and HDR10+ are also great.
2. The reason DV isn't on more releases is because it costs significantly more money than any other HDR color grade, and most of that money is going to the Dolby name, and not to the actual DV color grade, just like with Dolby's many sound formats.
3. That being said, the Big Six has the money to spend six figures apiece on DV color grades for 4Ks, but combining all six of them, the results are hit or miss. All majors' releases combined, the total numbers are probably like 50-60% of releases have DV. Ironically, the boutiques frequently have DV on most of their releases, despite having about 1% of the money that the Big Six have. When a boutique doesn't have DV, it's either a filmmaker saying no to DV (and/or any HDR), or it's the boutique simply not having the money to do DV grades on their releases, but they do a great HDR or HDR10 grade.
Me personally, so long as the 4K image doesn't suck, I'll be in whether it's SDR, HDR, DV, or anything like that. I know I'm in the vast minority with that, and while I'm happy when HDR/DV is included, and happy when it's done right, the absence of HDR/DV doesn't kill a release for me.

Lucy Diamond It's hard to believe how old this stuff is. I still remember "new shows", "new movies", and "new music" that aren't new at all. Yesterday I was listening to what I still consider a "new" album, FutureSex/LoveSounds by Justin Timberlake (best known for "SexyBack" and "What Goes Around... Comes Around"), and even I was stunned for a second when I realized that was nearly 20 years old, and that his follow-up The 20/20 Experience ("Suit & Tie", "Mirrors", "Take Back The Night") is now 12 years old. The "old" stuff I still think is 20-30 years old is really now 40 or 50 years old, if not more. "New" things I vividly remember seeing as a kid are very old, and "recent" memories are in fact years if not decades old. Even things I see that are "new items" are actually 15-20 year-old items that I still consider new. We're now in the process of cleaning out my grandparents' "new" house that they purchased 21 years ago.
Time flies faster than we think. I imagine in another 10-20 years, I'll still be thinking of all the "new" things in my life that aren't particularly new at all. At 26 years old, I've already become the old man screaming at the cloud.
