The Ladies of Mandrigyn (The Sun Wolf and Starhawk Series) (English Edition) Kindle版

First in the series from a New York Times–bestselling author and “fabulously talented writer” featuring a brilliant mercenary and his fierce female partner (Charlaine Harris).
Gifted with courage, strength, and the intelligence to know when to fight, Sun Wolf is the greatest mercenary in a land overrun by war. With his first lieutenant, Starhawk—a woman more deadly than any man—at his side, he has laid waste to countless cities, taking the best of their treasures for himself, and distributing the rest among his bloodthirsty crew. Then a woman comes to him, an emissary from the town of Mandrigyn, a lush port city recently sacked by a powerful, mad wizard of unmatched abilities. She offers Sun Wolf untold riches for the use of his army, but the captain is not fool enough to wage war against a magician. He refuses her offer, but that is not the end of it. The women of Mandrigyn can be very persuasive.
This ebook features an illustrated biography of Barbara Hambly, including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s personal collection.

    5つ星のうち5.0 Beautiful writing; well-conceived plot

I admire the author’s vocabulary and ability to describe settings with vivid details. It makes for an immersive experience in an alternate world, which is a key element in escapist reading.

The story is engaging and the characters are developed in a realistic way. Subtle changes after new experiences build to believable character arcs that are compelling and natural, even if supernatural. The author builds in hints along the way to foreshadow the climactic changes toward the end so the reader can accept what happens. Amazingly well done!

While there are a lot of characters, the author alternates the POV between two protagonists for most of the story. Some secondary characters die, but there is not a lot of emotional investment in them.

The plot mixes fantastic monsters, a bit of a sci-fi wormhole-like concept, magic, poison, martial training, violent battles with minimal gore, political and spiritual elements, and a slowly discovered romance. Such a great combination.

There are a half-dozen comma errors, a few odd typos, and a couple of awkward sentences, but that’s it for convention errors. There is alcohol consumption, killings, a brief torture scene with minimal details, references to concubines and whores, slavery, and some kissing but no detailed sex scenes.

The best thing about the story is that it is a stand alone novel. Readers can choose to read the next book in the series or be satisfied that the main plot elements related to the title are resolved in this first book.

I recommend this book for older readers who enjoy fantasy plots, humans vs creatures battle scenes, great character development, magic, a bit of sci-fi, and a hint of romance.

5つ星のうち3.0 a good yarn, too much repetition

Barbara Hambly has a good imagination and the story itself is fairly gripping - I was anxious to keep reading, and spent more time than I could really afford sneaking off for a few more minutes.

But I got very tired of the endless repetition - almost every time she appeared, Starhawk's profile and character were redrawn using a random selection from a reservoir of a few dozen words. The same was true of virtually every character, and indeed, every situation, journey, the weather or piece of landscape. This repetition added nothing to the story, and had it been left out the book would have lost nothing and been half the size.

I read this Author's Sun Cross series many years ago. As I recall, I enjoyed it. So when this book went on sale, I bought it. This is in a descriptive writing style. It has plenty of action. It kept me reading until the end, because the World is intriguing.

It did start slowly for me. I'm fact, after the first couple of chapters, I was wondering if I'd made a mistake in purchasing. But after the story got going, I quickly became immersed in the world and the main characters. Not to say that I didn't skim over some of the over-detailed paragraphs, but I still enjoyed it.

I'd give it a 3-1/2 Star rating, but since it ended well, I round it up to 4 stars. It's definitely worth reading if you enjoy action filled fantasy with a bit of romance.

    5つ星のうち5.0 Great Fantasy Read

I really enjoyed this book. The strong women in it made it a five star for me. Even though a fantasy the author brought the women to life and the story flowed well. Good descriptions and a bit bloodthy.

5つ星のうち5.0 As other's have said, one of Hambly's best

As other reviewers have said here, Barbara Hambly's "The Ladies of Mandrigyn" is one of her best books. I've recently re-read her Windrose Chronicle:

    - The Silent Tower (The Windrose Chronicles),
    - The Silicon Mage (The Windrose Chronicles), and
    - Dog Wizard (The Windrose Chronicles)

and her Darwath Trilogy (The Darwath Trilogy: The Time of the Dark, The Walls of Air, and The Armies of Daylight). Those were very good. But, this book, the first of her Sun Wolf and Starhawk series:

    - The Ladies of Mandrigyn (The Sun Wolf and Starhawk),
    - The Witches of Wenshar (The Sun Wolf and Starhawk), and
    - The Dark Hand of Magic (The Sun Wolf and Starhawk)

is better. The Windrose and the Darwath series were very similar to each other in characterizations, theme, and style. The books in each series were more like chapters than stand-alone books. "The Ladies of Mandrigyn" can stand on its own in its series and the characterizations and style have a bit of a Glen Cook "Tyranny of the Night" feel to them. As with "Windrose" and "Darwath," the main characters in "Ladies" are very well done and interesting. The secondary characters, though, are a bit better here. In the other series, the secondary characters were very archetypical for a Fantasy (you practically knew what they would say just by the roles they were filling). The secondaries here have more independence from the Fantasy genre, but they do tend to stick heavily to their roles. Even so, overall, I rate this book at an Excellent 5 stars out of 5.
