Painted Namor

This is Namor for Marvel Crisis Protocol. He’s affiliated in both Defenders, where he leans further away from the ‘street level’ theme that they sometimes have and more towards the earlier comic references to the team, and SHIELD for whom he has another leadership. Namor is very much a glass cannon in the game; he has decent defensive stats but nothing amazing and will definitely get taken out regularly by any determined attacker. On the other hand, his output is insane; he’s one of the fastest characters in the game with both a long move and medium base and he has a Charge-like ability to get him stabbing people more often. Namor has an ability to ignore enemy damage reduction which will make him very valuable into some of the tougher characters such as Rhino or Juggernaut. Finally his spender attack can make enemies drop their Extracts which is huge in the scenario game.

I absolutely loved painting Namor. His speedo-wearing physique is beautifully sculpted to let me work on his skin tones. The results aren’t anything to compare to truly skilled painters but comparison is the thief of joy and I’m proud of the way he looks. The scenic base is a fun touch too, and I enjoyed messing about with the water, stones and beach he’s surfing across. The only thing I don’t like is that the pose (which incidentally, is almost identical to Paploo and Chief Chirpa!) means that it’s inevitable that his trident will break off at some point during play and he’ll spend the rest of his tabletop time just waving a nice stick around.

Painted Chief Chirpa

This is Chief Chirpa, one of the Ewok Primary units for Star Wars Shatterpoint. As a Primary, he (?) is theoretically equal in power to mighty Jedi knights and so on, so I suspect that if you’re looking for a strictly lore-accurate representation of Chirpa’s power level then you’re going to find that it’s rather exaggerated. But the nature of Shatterpoint is that there are no horde armies so all the units of each type must be close to each other in power. Chirpa’s main advantage for me is his ability to increase the attacking power of all other Ewoks within range 4 of him, which can start getting them up to having some quite scary dice pools. His Identity (ie his unique ability) is to be able to move and either attack or heal whenever another Ewok is Wounded, which is nice but it’s random which one you get and of course that means that sometime you attack when you’d rather heal and vice versa. Overall he’s pretty fun, and of course as he’s one of only two Ewok primary units (plus Leia, more about her later) it means that I’m playing him in most games where I want to keep on theme.

If you’ve been paying attention you’ll spot that Chief Chirpa’s sculpt is almost identical to Paploo’s. This is annoying even when they’re both painted, but it was a real pain to play them together before I got them both done! I had a lot of fun with the fur texture and the use of naturalistic colours has been a very enjoyable change from the superheroes who’ve dominated my painting desk over the last few years.
