The Latest Compal Comics Auctions (Feb 2013)

So much fantastic detail in every panel!

The latest Compal Comics auctions have gone online, and the catalogue features some cracking stuff! One of the highlights for me is the original artwork by Denis McLoughlin, who, as I said in my previous post, is my favourite adventure strip artist. The auction is for a Saber page, but with an estimate of £200 - £250, it's sadly a long way out of what I can afford!

The first issue of Happy Days is also in there, although not in as good condition as the one that was on Ebay in 2010, it still has a good estimate of £70 - £100.

Cover art by Roy Wilson.
There are a lot of early Dandy comics up for grabs, including the very first issue at lot #20!

There is a collection of Beano covers printer proofs for sale too, starting with issue #18.

An interesting piece is an Eagle booklet called The Baden Powell Story, which collects the Baden Powell stories which appeared on the comic's back cover in 1954. It can be found at lot #84 with an estimate of £40 - £60.

A full set of 32 Rocket comics can be found at lot #91, and are expected to sell for a whopping £150 - £200!

Another cool auction which I'd definitely like (but again can't afford) is the complete year of Wham for 1965. It is expected to sell for £150 - £200.

The promotional edition of Cheeky, in it's original folder with the free gifts for issue one and two is available at lot #151, with an estimate of £120 - £150.

The next-but-one auction has an interesting piece of comic history - a mock-up version of Dinkie #1. The interesting part is that the comic was originally going to be called Bonnie, but this version was never published.

Lot #159 featured some original cover artwork for Shiver and Shake, the same artwork that was recently featured on Irmantas' blog Kazoop!

And the final auction is given to the very first issue of Viz, which is expected to go for £150 - £200.

This is just some of the many auctions they have (there are over 150 in the British section!), so be sure to check it out - they're always interesting to browse through!

Compal Comics Autumn 2012 Results

As usual, I'll be covering the results of some of the auctions which featured in the latest Compal Comics auction. At lot #6 was the first 72 issues of Modern Wonder, which was a sci-fi magazine with amazing cutaway illustrations! With an estimate of £80 - £120, the set sold for £319!

With a profesionally restored spine and two childrens doodles inside this first Dandy annual appeared at lot #18 in vg condition. It beat its estimate of £450 - £500, selling for £544.

Lot #52 featured a complete year of 1953 Beano comics. 1953 was a very important year for the comic, as it was the year that introduced Roger the Dodger, Little Plum and Minnie the Minx. It completely smashed the estimate of £300 - £400, selling for a cracking £661!

This fine copy of the 1956 Beano book sold for £121, almost doubling the high end of its estimate of £45 - £65.

A near complete year of the Dandy from 1954 was offered, with just one issue breaking its run! With an estimate of £250 - £300, the collection in fine- condition sold for £786!

This fine condition Beezer book from 1958 sold for a whopping £181, well over double the estimate!

At lot #60 was a vg- copy of Topper #1, with characters such as Micky the Monkey and Beryl the Peril the issue sold for £333!

A tinplate advertisment for Comet featuring Kit Karson had an estimate of £150 - £200, selling for a little over the estimate at £212.

The rare Eagle promotional comic was offered at lot #86. This comic was given away in advance of the actual first issue to see what kids would think of it, and is of course very rare! In very fine condition it flew away to £1089!

A bunch of early TV21 comics were offered, all vg - vfn condition. The first issue with the free gift sold for £177, with the following issues around £40 - £50 each.

The last item in the catalouge was a bound volume of Scream comic with the free gift from #2 and all the summer specials. Scream was banned after just15 issues because it was considered too scary for kids, and so is of course very collectable! With an estimate of £60 - £80, the auction closed at £157.

Compal Comics Summer 2012 Results

The results for the summer auctions over on Compal Comics are up, and as always I've picked out a few highlights to share with you! First up is the obvious star of the show - a [vg] 1940 Beano book! With an estimate of £2000 - £2500, the book sold for a whopping £3630!

The first Beano comic and advertising flyer was also up on offer, but with a ripped front cover it was only valued at £650 - £750. Despite this it still fetched a healthly £849.

At lot #49 was a rare edition of Okay Comics Issue No. 6. Okay Comics were UK reprints of U.S. comics, including characters like Mutt and Jeff and Tail Spin Tommy. Okay Comics was originally printed in the U.S. and lasted weekly for 20 issues. It sold within its estimate of £20 - £30, with a final price tag of £24. Definatly one of the cheaper items in the catalouge!

Lot #100 featured some very nice Beryl the Peril artwork by her creator Davy Law! With an estimate of £600 - £700, the final price was much higher selling for a spectacular £1222! Cor!
Beryl the Peril was so popular she even got her own annual, which ran from 1959 to 1988! A [fn] copy of the first annual was up this time, with an estimate of £50 - £70. It sold just within that region, heading out to it's new owner for £69.
Another of Davy Law's creations was Dennis the Menace, who was also lucky enough to get his own annual! The first one (from 1956) in [vg] condition was thrown in with some other annuals, and sold within it's estimate for £89.
Laurel and Hardy were the stars of Film Fun, and so it's no suprise that they were used to advertise the comic! This tin sign from the early 50's was expected to sell for £100 - £150, but instead bidders rose it to an amazing £304!
Early Oor Wullie books are always collectable, and this copy from 1953 in [vg] condition was no exception, selling just over it's estimate at £330.
Smash! issue #3 with it's free gift sold for just £72, despite selling on eBay recently for over £300 - without the original comic! This just goes to show, you can never truly value comics, as they're worth different amounts to different people!
There were just 20 of the Dan Dare figures made, and No. 18 was offered at Lot No. 83. With an estimate of £350 - £450, it actually sold for £550!
Tiger issue one with half of it's original free gifts was offered up this time. With Roy of the Rovers getting discovered, this issue sold for an excellent £930!
That's all I'm highllighting from this catalouge, and the full lot can be seen over at compalcomics.com! The next auction goes live in August, so keep your eyes peeled for any hidden treasures!

Compal Comics Spring 2012

The Spring 2012 Compal Comics auction closed on Tuesday and the results have just been released. Here are some of the catalouge's highlights:

Buster Issue #1 with printers dummy [fn-].

The first ever issue of Buster from 1960 along with the original printer's dummy, which has some colour differences to the final comic. It also came with the 1962 christmas issue. This piece had an estimate of £100 - £150, but sold for a whopping £262!

At lot #39 was this rather tatty Beano issue #1 in poor condition.

The comic was very worn and had several pieces missing, and sold for only £786 - which isn't a lot for a first Beano!

The first two Beano books were also on sale, both in vg condition!

The 1940 Beano book [vg] had an estimate of £1,300 - £1,600 and sold for £1,936. The 1941 Beano book [vg+] sold for £738 - really showing the difference that can be made between the first issue (or book, or whatever) and the second one! The book was estimated at £450 - £550.

Harold Hare's Own Paper issue #1 appeared at lot #93.

Coming with the free gift and in [fn] condition, the comic was expected to sell somewhere between £35 - £45, but instead sold for a whopping £223! Cor!

Another first issue that came with it's free gift was Beezer, over at lot #60.

This also sold miles above it's estimate of £150 - £200, heading proudly to it's new owner with a £524 price on it's head.

Some more of Ken Reid's original Faceache artwork went on sale, near the end of the catalouge at lot #164.

It sold for £121, just above it's estimate of £70 - £100. (This just goes to show, you can never really value comics, as each one is worth a different price to each person.)

For fans of Dan Dare there were plenty of rare items up for sale for them to feast their eyes on, including some (deep breath) original artwork, a table tennis set, some birthday cards, a picture card album, a stamp folder, a figures set, a jigsaw, a film viewer, some pop up books, a horlicks mug, a pocket watch and even a cricket ball! Seen below however, is the Dan Dare space pistol - which sold for £145! Pow!

And finally, the last lot in the catalouge, this set of Denis Gifford books.

The poster set was Denis' original proof copy, and the set fired away to £138! (Another auction to exceed it's estimate - which was £80 - £120.)

You can see the rest of the stuff they had up for offer and the results at www.compalcomics.com
