Azrakh the Annihilator

I always loved this image of a World Eaters Chaos Lord, foreboding in Terminator armour (my favourite models since way back in Space Hulk 1st edition days).

In 2022 (when the miniature was released), artist Mark Gibbons had this to say about his painting, which was also used on the cover of White Dwarf magazine in February 1995:

Painted a mere 28 years ago, I think (the previously unnamed) Azrakh the Annihilator is my most-published Games Workshop piece, but it's a painting that almost never happened.

I submitted his sketch as a freelance commission to GW and when John Blanche reviewed it he asked for a more dynamic, arms-raised, posture. In a 'deeply uncharacteristic' fit of pique, I said if I couldn't paint him the way I wanted to, then I wasn't going to paint him at all!

John, not wanting to escalate my diva moment to Beyoncé-like proportions, relented and all these years later Azrakh strides onto the tabletop, courtesy of the warp-powered sculpting & painting masters within the GW Design Studio.

So I was pretty happy to acquire a NIS copy of the 2022 Commemorative series model recently. One day he will lead my 40k World Eaters army!

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!

To be honest his lore is not deep, and was retrospectively made up go with the model release. Then again, he is a World Eater, so depth of character isn't really a requirement!

"A pitiless killer even by the standards of the World Eaters, Azrakh the Annihilator earned his moniker during the assault on the Iron Warriors fortress dubbed Orion Gate. Of the 400 warriors that took part in this assault, only Azrakh survived. His armour was covered in the blood of not only Iron Warriors and demon engine oil, but also the blood of his fellow World Eaters."

Note to self, the backlit green light on this one is a pretty cool effect and reminiscent of the artwork (not my work)

He also doesnt stink in the original Heresy era Legion colours! (again not my work)

Leviathan takes the field!

Victory in his opening battle - the first skulls have been claimed for the XIIth! Drop podding him into the enemy line armed with a Siege claw and drill really upset the enemy's plans!

For disruption value it was great, also isolating his forward elements to be destroyed in detail by the rushing 'Zerkers. My Leviathan had the resilience to absorb (and win) after being charged himself, which a Contemptor probably wouldn’t have

Heresy Bash

This week we got a Horus Heresy going, with a rare opportunity for my World Eaters to fight alongside Reilly's Emperor's Children, and facing off against club mates Marty and Lachie, another Dad and Lad combo team playing Ultramarines and Night Lords respectively. Slowpainter John also came along for the spectacle and banter (and chilli I suspect!)

Rolled up a different table setup, which really helped compress the action

We got some new units onto the table, from Marty's lovely Quad Laser Vindicator (aka Space StuG), Reilly's Sabre Strike tank with Neutron blaster (christened the Space Hetzer) and Lord Eidolon, and my recently finished Leviathan Siege dreadnought- carried into battle in a drop pod I was still base coating 2hrs before battle.  All performed well on the table and I can hear the list tweaking already.  We also used the night fighting rules for the first time, which benefited everyone bar Marty

World Eater Despoilers use the ruins to cover their advance up the battlefield.

Once the game got going proper I was pretty wrapped up in the great narrative and forgot to take many pics. As ever, keeping a clever (and well rule read) Lad on each side kept the game flowing.  I had been playing a few rules incorrectly so there was some good system learning along way too.

World Eater Tactical Marines with Chain Bayonets advance...

Having dropping into the enemy line from Orbit, this was the moment I had been waiting for - our first Dreadnought melee clash! Marty beat me to the punch, close assaulting me and the resulting fury saw him explode and nearly take me with him! My Leviathan walked away with his first battel trophy, but with a major and near fatal limp!

Duel of the Fates!

Great mates, lots of laughs and narrative fun - loving the thematic games we are getting and the streamlined rules system. Much more to follow!

World Eaters Leviathan Dreadnought

Seige Drill close combat loadout

I had a ball making this Leviathan Siege Dreadnought for my growing 12th Legion Horus Heresy army. I spent the extra time playing about with magnetising the weapons, and as a result have 3 different load outs available- a little extra time but well worth it. I also enjoyed adding the chains and skulls for that authentic World Eaters look!

Long range fire support with a pair of quad barrelled storm cannons

Now to get him onto the table to bring some havoc!

Grav-flux bombard and Cyclonic Melta-lance: the coolest names going!

This kinda got me thinking about going back to Adeptus Titanicus too...

World Eater Reinforcements!

This week I have been working on some WE reinforcements… and Reilly painted the Red Hand Destroyers for me as a present.

My XIIth Legion force has now grown to 1350 points

hugs!!!

Some much needed Ranged firepower!

The Nails are Biting!

Marty's Iron Hand brace to receive the charge!

Having a hoot loading up on Despoilers and Ravagers (still WIP) supported by Khârn and an Apothecary, and just wailing on dudes. Skulls for the XIIth Legion!

I won 6-4 on secondary VP. More importantly we all had an awesome time enjoying the immersive narrative and theme.

Note to self: Must remember not to open fire between moving and firing, so as not to invite a volley in reaction fire!

Heresy era World Eaters

Got my starting World Eater force onto the table for an intro game - a predator, 10 tacticals, 12 Despoilers, 5 Rampagers (WIP and not shown) with Khârn the Bloody at the head of the murder column.

Inspired to add more to 2k and beyond!

AHPC XII: Chaos Landraider "Blood Storm"

It was only 2 weeks ago amidst this very challenge that I got obsessive over a single, low point submission. I wouldn't fall into that particular hole again so soon would I?... You know it!

Meet Bloodstorm, a Chaos Landraider with a multitude of Spikey bits and more than the odd skull affixed to the superstructure in praise of the Dark Gods. To be more precise it is a captured and repurposed Imperial vehicle, turned against it former masters - Chaos guys are a bit insidious like that. Its also big and bright and red. Chaos guys like that too.

Obviously I went overboard once again with the customisation and the silly amount of layering and edge highlighting (not seen well in the pics) to get the bright, vibrant red colour.  Hopefully that draws the enemy fire and lets the other parts of my army get close enough to breathe sweet nothings in the enemy's ears, before they hack them off (and the rest of the head too, ideally).

In true Khorne fashion is trying to climb OUT of the heavily armoured fighting vehicle so he can hit things with his chainsword - Khorne guys REALLY like doing that.

AHPC XII: Chaos Hellbrute and Silver Bayonet Beastie

My next AHPC submission was a Chaos Hellbrute/Dreadnought. Basically, this is a hulking murder obsessed robot named KILLFRENZY who is controlled by an insane, blood craving heretic. Good times!

For the 40k affectionados this is a converted Blood Angels Death Company Dreadnought fitted with a pair of nasty looking Blood Talon close combat weapons, heavy flamer and storm bolter.  Lost in battle when its former pilot succumbed to wounds, the happy-go-lucky World Eaters salvaged it and interred their own ill-mannered psychopath who rather enjoys his new toy and its plush (if somewhat blood spattered) upholstery.

I enjoyed sculpting the battle damage and trying to get a more dynamic feel to what is a rather static and boxy sculpt, even trying some OSL and 3d printed effects (Translation - yes, I again made the classic Challenge error in being completely obsessed with minor detail on a single model). I also used some new techniques with oil washes over acrylic base coats.; it certainly takes a lot longer to dry and I haven't got it quite right yet, but I got the grungier look I wanted.  I'm trying to improve my basing game too and did more in that regard with a slain foe who, quite coincidentally, looks remarkably just like the new Thousand Sons force that Reilly is painting...

"All is Dust..."

While I'm here I'll also post this strange little fellow whom I found lurking in my stash: a Razormouth from the Reaper Black Bones series. I built him as a beastie for Silver Bayonet, but he will be equally at home in the Necromunda Underhive or similar.

That completes my 4 outer sphere planets (Istvaan V, Glorantha, Klenadathu and Skaro) and so I now transit via the adjacent Great Abyssal to start the challenge of the middle ring...

May monthly hobby roundup...40k campaign and more Beastmen!

Time for another monthly hobby wrapup - I'm finding that I'm not blogging as much, but I am enjoying Twitter for quick hobby fixes during the day.  If you are Twitter competent, curious or inclined you'll find me at: https://twitter.com/Paul89487518

This month we have completed our first 40k Path to Glory Campaign and what a hoot it was.  The focus on narrative play in an evocative list growing process was a lot of fun.
Reilly's Necron army is looking awesome in its Mephrit Dynasty orange colour scheme
My Berserkers demand Hydraulic fluid blood substitute for the Hydraulic fluid blood substitute God!
In our penultimate game we played the Retrieve the Spy game which was interesting - Reilly ended up pushing his Necrons forwards to grab the agent, which allowed me the deep strike in my Chaos Lord and his retinue of Red Butcher terminators, which got messy (in a good way for me)...
Oh the joys of a deep strike with these boys - 30% of the time, it works every time!
My boys slaughtered 19 of the 20 Necron Warriors... man I hate those Necron resurrection protocols! Through his clever use buffs, abilities and strategems Reilly regenerated 17 of them! :-)  But in the meantime my Chaos Lord "Volk the Blooded" got into Melee with the Necron Overlord "Ankhep the Unliving", which was rather convenient as Vlok had fastidiously sharpened his Lightning Claws only the day before...
Time to play the "Duel of the Fates" theme music again! (which we do of course)
Fresh from that Victory, my Chaos Lord was rewarded by Khorne with ascension to Daemonhood (cue buying and painting a new Daemon Prince figure) - one more victory and the Campaign would be mine!  We played the Duel scenario from Vigilus Ablaze which was wonderfully evocative. The Blood Flowed and Victory was indeed mine.  A great wrap to a really fun progressive campaign.  The next one has already started, with Reilly pitting his Necrons against my Tyranids from Hivefleet Charybdis!

Then I got to observe some club mates play a fantastic Hoplite battle using Men of Bronze.  The lads have adjusted the rules just a little and they played very well - the table looked awesome and you can see more at the full writeup here: https://agrabbagofgames.wordpress.com/2020/05/21/attica-raid-428-b-c/

The Spartan lochargos blesses his gaming dice before the battle
And finally, after a COVID hiatus I have been tinkering with my Warhammer Beastmen army again. I have finished another Gor regiment of 20 figs which I call the Blood Snout Herd.  Overall I now have 70 Gors, 10 Bestigiors and 22 Ungors ready for battle - so I'm now past the half way mark :-)
For something a bit different to my other regiments I gave these Gors a more bloodied, frenzied look
Sadly, after too much fermented goat's milk both Larr and Grarr thought they were appointed to make the battle banner...
I have also been sprucing up a Centigor unit that I got second hand at Cancon in January.  I was thrilled when Reilly found these in the Bring & Buy stand and its been very satisfying to bring new life to the classic metal figures.

April Hobby Roundup and a Skully gift

Well what a month or two its been!  For many around the world it has been a very challenging times for a myriad of reasons. Great to see that some have had both the opportunity and inclination to do some hobby and I have enjoyed watching the various projects.

I have not been one of those - indeed, I have been very busy being part of the Government response here.  Extremely busy but wonderful to be part of the solution and helping the many State and Commonwealth authorities and agencies.  Along the way I have gotten a few little things painted and the odd game in too. Reilly and I have have been upgunning some of our Kill Teams to play narrative 40k games - particularly the incremental Path to Glory system.  Its been a hoot, pitting Ankhep the Unliving and his Necron horde against Chaos Warlord Drok the Blooded and his World Eaters.

This week I got something very special in the mail from Barks in recognition of my win in our AHPC X "Skully McSkullface" side challenge.  Most appropriately it was... a servoskull!  So awesome, thanks Barks - I love it !

There is only one thing to do when you get something this cool in the mail - use it on the table immediately.  We found a good scenario where the servo skull would be the focus of the whole game: the next adventure of Drok and Ankhep was afoot!  Ahhh, the joy of a live in opponent in isolation.

What followed was a tense tabletop tug of war in which I grabbed the Servoskull early and played keepings off for the rest of the game, staying very narrowly ahead of the Necron hoard that was after me. It was more like a game of Blood Bowl really!

My Warlord and his Red Butchers wade into the fray

My berzerkers made lots of blood flow (mostly their own it must be said)

One must always play 'Duel of the Fates' on your phone when warlords clash like this
When they work, berzerkers are awesome. Mostly I cant make them work, so its a treat when they do!

My Rhinos made highly effective LOS blockers - then both exploded and killed lots of enemy troops. Cool!
The game just didnt end, going for 7 turns in unceasing nail biting endgame. At the last, it came down to this - my last 4 figs (still with the skul) facing off against Ankhep the Necron Overloard.
If he only killed two of my guys in the upcoming melee I would win, 3 and it would be a draw, 4 and he would claim the skull for the Victory...
Barks - the basing on the skull even matches my army, how cool is that!
And he rolled double 1s for the charge, tripped over his own feet and I managed to crawl away with a win! A down to the wire nail biter! What a hoot, and all because of the new Servo Skull.
Thanks Barks for the great gift and inspiring a really enjoyable game! :-)

Hope you are all well out there in blog-land. Stay safe!
