Women we love / Iman

WOMEN WE LOVE
IMAN

Iman & David Bowie / That Something Called Love

Iman & David Bowie
THAT SOMETHING CALLED LOVE

When one of music’s most influential and creative rockstars and a pioneering strikingly beautiful African-American model met in 1992 at a date set up by their common hairdresser, it could have led to a glamorous encounter, a rapid sexy relationship but instead, it was transformed into a romantic marital existence. Even though they are not a superstar couple in the same way as contemporary pop and films stars that fuel their celebrity with a perfectly marketed love story, David Bowie and Iman did however manage to gain an iconic aura thanks to their ability of leading a normal intimacy and finding success in their very own individual careers. No need for an expensive mise en scène, tabloids covers or reality television shows, the couple diffuses its own magnetic feel as David Bowie clearly states: ‘You would think that a rockstar being married to a supermodel would be one of the greatest things in the world. It is’.

Iman The Edit Interview:  'I'm Not A Model Anymore. I'm Just Me'

Iman turned 58-years-old Thursday, which promptly reminded us what "Gone With The Wind Fabulous" really means. The fashion icon has managed to memersize fashion fans (and beyond) for nearly 40 years and shows no signs of slowing down.

Iman is the Somalian exile whose fierce spirit drove her to become the world's first black supermodel. Now she's working to bring health and education to her homeland. She talks to Carole Cadwalladr about racism in modelling – and a secret holiday in London with her husband, David Bowie

I
t's a warm early summer day in New York, and at a fashionable photographer's studio in fashionable Soho Iman is having her portrait taken. On the walls are dozens of enlarged close-ups of other people who have all sat, at one time or another, for Platon, the London-born photographer who has made his name and career photographing the rich and powerful.

All the greats are here: Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Muammar Gaddafi. And beneath them, Iman Mohamed Abdulmajid, the only black woman in a room of images of mostly white men, is doing her best to follow Platon's directions. "That's GORGEOUS, sweetheart. That's right, turn your chin just very slightly. Thank you, darling. That's fucking BEAUTIFUL!"
It's 24 years since Iman retired from modelling, but you'd never know it. She's a completely unlikely looking 58 and is sitting in front of a stark all-white backdrop simply dressed all in black – black jeans and a black jumper that emphasises her extraordinary swan-like neck – and she is completely focused. Two assistants move in to adjust the lights and Platon crouches down to whisper his next set of instructions. "I want to see your compassion, that's what this is all about. And your bravery. Show me that brave, brave woman. Show me that with your eyes."

Children are dying before our eyes, and we can stop it Saturday 6 August 2011

Until last week, I had not let my 11-year-old daughter Alexandria see the pictures of the food crisis in my home country of Somalia.
I didn't think she was ready. Finally, I showed them to her, and she cried. No wonder: thousands of children arrive at feeding centres having not eaten or drunk for days.

While it may have been love at first sight for David Bowie when he met his now wife, the philanthropist and former model Iman wasn’t convinced.
The musician has previously said he “was naming the children the first night we met”.
