The forecast calls for 100% chance of quick-time showers

There is a moment in Heavy Rain when you realize the game is less about playing and more about watching yourself play. It wants to be cinema, and in its way, it kind of succeeds. The camera lingers, the rain falls endlessly, and the characters move with a kind of deliberate weight. But cinema is not only about images — it is about rhythm, about the pulse of storytelling — and here the game falters.

The game does have a strong hook: a father, a missing child, a serial killer whose calling card is the rain. These are the ingredients of a thriller Hitchcock might have toyed with. Yet the execution is uneven. The dialogue often feels stilted, as though translated twice before arriving on screen, and as someone who has devoured many a mystery novel: is poorly written. I am sure 15 years ago when the game initially released it might have seemed like a techincal marvel but the intervening years have not been kind to it. The performances, captured through very early motion capture technology, hover in the uncanny valley — where characters are expressive enough to remind us of humanity, but stiff enough to remind us of its absence.

What Heavy Rain does well is atmosphere. Few games have so thoroughly committed to mood. The rain is not just weather; it is metaphor, it is oppression, it is the constant reminder of dread. But atmosphere alone cannot carry a narrative. The story, branching though it may be, too often collapses under the weight of too many contrivances. Choices feel important in the moment, but their consequences are sometimes arbitrary, sometimes illogical. The illusion of control is powerful, but it is still an illusion.

For a game released in 2010, there is ambition here, and ambition deserves respect. Heavy Rain wants to elevate the medium, to prove that games can rival film. In its best moments, it gestures toward that possibility. But film is not only a series of moving images, it's about storytelling, it's about executing on it's ambition, on coherence, and its truth. Too often, Heavy Rain feels like a rehearsal for a something that never really comes together.

Verdict

A noble experiment, drenched in atmosphere, but undone by its own limitations.

Artfully bleak, brutally beautiful

Since Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 swept this years The Game Awards with 9 wins including the coveted Game of the Year trophy, I figured it was time to give this review an update. Not only is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 the most nominated game in the history of The Game Awards (11 nominations), it now also stands as the game that has won the most.

There are moments in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 when the screen feels less like a game and more like a canvas. The French developer Sandfall has painted a world that is staggeringly beautiful, achingly somber, and perpetually gripping. To play it is to step into a living film, one where every frame is composed with the care of a cinematographer and every line of dialogue resonates like a well-delivered monologue.

Roger Ebert often said that movies are empathy machines. Here, Expedition 33 becomes an empathy engine. Its characters are not archetypes but people—flawed, hopeful, desperate, and brave. Their journeys are punctuated by secrets, surprises, and twists that feel earned rather than contrived. The writing is exquisite, the voice acting superb, and the soundtrack atmospheric enough to linger long after the game is turned off.

The combat, is turn-based yet thrilling, and is a revelation. It borrows from the lineage of Japanese RPGs but reimagines them with a distinctly Western flair. Every battle is a dance of tactics and timing, a test of patience and precision. Even when difficulty spikes verge on unfair, they serve to remind us that struggle is part of the narrative, that triumph must be wrested from despair.

Visually, the game is a "blisteringly beautiful assault on the senses". Landscapes shimmer with painterly detail, and the environments feel like places you could wander in dreams. The artistry is not just technical, it is emotional. It makes you feel the weight of the expedition, the fragility of hope, and the grandeur of fate.

If Ebert were still alive, he might say that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not merely a game but a story told with the tools of interactivity. It is cinema you inhabit, literature you shape, and music you fight to. It is proof that video games, at their best, are not diversions but experiences—works of art that can stand alongside the finest of films and novels.

A somber yet hopeful journey, dazzling in beauty, profound in storytelling, and unforgettable in execution.
