Wow... Just... Wow...

This game has so much to offer and is honestly one of my favorite games ever, and probably will be until the day I die. Time after time this game exceeds my expectations. The story is captivating, the game-play is crisp and rewarding, and the music OOOH the music... Outstanding.

I've never really been a person who was that into 2D platformers, but after a recommendation from a friend, I had to give it a go, and it honestly changed my view on the platforming genre as a whole.

After initially getting hooked on the story, I found myself enjoying the game-play more and more as I kept playing. It added technique after technique, with some being shown later that made me want to go back and play the game over... WHICH IT OFFERS! I honestly am amazed how perfect this game is. The level of difficulty is malleable, with options to lower or increase the difficulty depending on your needs. If you find the game too challenging, there is always the option to lower it in the settings, allowing for every player to tailor the difficulty to their heart's desires.

As I mentioned earlier, the music is one of the best parts about this game. Jam after jam of catchy, yet unique songs that I still listen to even after not touching the game for a few months. The soundtrack alone would warrant anyone to buy this game.

I cannot recommend this game enough

I want to love this game so much, but yet it fails in a crucial way.

This game starts off really fun, but as you get deeper into the game-play, the flaws become noticeable extremely quickly. It starts off pretty action packed, new buildings and factions are released every level (Story Mode). But as you get further into the game, you realize how little the game has to offer. Instead of adding real challenge, the game simply increases costs for everything. Feasting becomes pointless after the 3rd or 4th time, and expanding past a certain point only really has a purpose if you are playing as Egil (Who can claim land for free). The game-play boils down to a resource managing game that artificially increases the difficulty every season. The main difficulty isn't even in the enemies you face, but the resources you need. It's frustrating to play as many factions as some are just pointless compared to others.

The story is also quite lacking. The moment I started the story, I was super excited as there was voice over, cool cinematics, and interesting characters. But each level starts off with a voiceover, but then switches to just text? I'm not sure about this design choice, and it took the immersion out of it for me. The story also ended up being extremely bland with it following a generic story arc. Hero wants revenge, gets revenge, finds out there is a bigger person to get revenge on who wants to destroy the world. A formula that works, but comes across as extremely generic.

Honestly, there are way better games that achieve the same thing as Northgard. If you want a game like this, that is better in almost every way, try out Stronghold Legends.

4/10 - Quite Disappointing

An extremely relaxing game that consists of finding the exact right formula of buildings. After about 5 hours of game-play, nothing new is introduced, yet I keep coming back to try to beat my high score.

The way certain buildings combo with others is super satisfying. For example, the temple building when used correctly can give 100+ points easily, but if you don't understand where to place it and don't leave room for it, it can subtract a lot from your score.

The way the game handles moving on to other islands is a little disappointing as I would like to keep some sort of record for the islands I've completed.

Other than that small feature which I would have liked, it is still an amazing city builder that I often play when I want to relax for a bit, and for only 5 dollars?! Amazing :)

Early Access Review
Pros
-Good Music
-Great Multiplayer
-Replayability through the roof
-You will never have the same run twice
-Good character diversity (Each character plays almost completely different)
-Tons of content, even for early access
-Developers that listen to players
-Synergies with items
-Stacking items (provides absurdity in some runs)

Cons
-A little unfair at times, many runs end in being one shotted
-Teleporter can be extremely hard to find
-Fire enemies do WAY too much damage, usually resulting in quick deaths
-Some minor bugs, but that's to be expected with an early access game

In conclusion, this game is a masterpiece. I played the first one, and I didn't think that a 3rd person shooter would fit the style, but it exceeded my expectations. It is fun alone, and with friends. The developers are always fixing bugs, and adding new content. I'm extremely excited to see what the developers will add in future updates.

9.5/10 - Worth the price
