I’m not the kind of person to say suicide is selfish. I think that narrative is victim blaming. There are a lot of factors involved. I have my own very deeply personal and traumatic experiences with the topic. But Rien’s suicide is not just one out of misery because of his life circumstance, but because he has no more victims to redirect his stress onto. He has no more distractions because all of his victims are either forever gone from his life or dead. He’s not able to find a new victim in the state he’s in. So he decides to commit suicide.
