Target Audience: Very High Tolerance Roguelite Players Who Don't Mind Repetition and......well actually wait for some redesign.

Summary:

Look at the history of my profile, and you'll note that I've written over 400 steam reviews, and most of them are substantial. Like in this format, or similar. I say this to express that with that experience, some of the hardest reviews for me to write are of games that obviously have some passion put into them, but fail at almost every level from a game design perspective. Where a concept has potential, that if it had more of a budget or time that it could have been a solid game, but in the end it fails to any expected impact from a fun, story, or any sort of value for the end-user. I understand what it takes to make these games, I understand that it's not as simple as people make it out to be at times: but that doesn't overlooked the fact when a game just....fails.

Frustration was the name of the game with Tower Princess. Combat starts off as a major problem, with hit registration not being clear. Am I doing damage? I don't know, apparently not, and it doesn't help when the sound design around everything won't give me a hint that someone is behind me, or where exactly a spell came from (even if there is one). This leads to a frustration, especially when the consistent theme that I had throughout my play session was “man, this needed more time in the oven”. Certain attacks/animations from enemies are way too quick and deal damage before you have time to react, but then in the same breathe, some are way too long and don't pose any sort of threat. It's inconsistent all over the place, and you sit there getting more and more frustrated. Level design is confusing and doesn't have natural pathways to guide you at times. You also find the repetition of the supposed procedural generation (at least that's what I think there is? It's still uncleer) not doing enough to really feel different from run to run. Things feel extended for no good reason (boss fight against the chef) while others feel like they are missing elements. It feels like the game is in Early Access in a bad way.

Like, there's potential under the surface here, there's some good art assets, and with a lot of polish, there could be something here. I get that financial elements may have forced the hand with things like the kickstarter element, but it doesn't overshadow that the game feels clunky, it feels unpolished at certain points, and it just feels like that the game isn't ready for prime time. You can see the influence of the game's they say they took inspiration from. But they took elements, put them together, and didn't understand exactly why they worked well in those games, and not in combination in this one. It just becomes a monster. And frustrating.

Stream Footage: https://youtu.be/WJ7ijk_11ZA

Lists:
Positives:
  • There's some good art assets in here, in between everything.
  • The boss design (what I got to), was good in conception. There's some ideas that are interesting in the overall picture.
  • The names are goofy in the right way.
  • There's potential under the surface here.

Negative:
  • Combat is frustration: with bad information being given regarding hit registration, enemy location, and feels unbalanced.
  • Really confusing choices. Skills on a time cool down + an ability to heal with the Zombie Princess means.....you can always get back to full health. Like....maybe not cooldown out of combat? It feels like it didn't get thought out well.
  • Game doesn't naturally introduce elements, and it can feel like the game is fighting you at every turn: and not in a good way.
  • The game has a lot of moments where you're like “wait, what does that mean?” Where did that item go? What does that feature “mean”. The game doesn't really explain itself well at times.
  • Camera can be just.....irritating. Weird choices on implementation (not being able to easily move to a ranged enemy because I'm not directly looking at him with the target system seems like a weird choice).
  • I honestly don't see any reason not to use the Zombie Princess over anyone else. Weird balance choices everywhere.
  • Sound Design is a disaster. Certain choices are the definition of annoying (the popping on ammo reloading being a prime example), and most of the time the information you would want to have sound....doesn't.
  • Game doesn't teach you a lot after the first tutorial and expects you to figure it out....and yet you're sitting there confused wondering what the game wants from you at times.
  • The controls can feel stiff at first. Some of the art choices don't help in some of the “bendiness” of models and weapons.

Target Audience: Strategy Players

Summary:

If you're coming to this review to assure that your 3 bucks to spend on Mechanibot is worth your time, then rest assured, Mechanibot delivers. The gameplay design leads to interesting loadout variation as well as fun upgrade paths that will feel familiar from run to run, but having little changes that you'll appreciate in the repetition that occurs in this auto-battler. The game is interesting in that aspect: being familiar and having you do a lot of the same things from run to run, and yet never feeling like you're doing the same thing...even though you pretty much are. That's a sign of subtle yet wise game design, and building your loadout of robots and seeing what you can maximize is fantastic. The play field design and enemy sizes feels like it's been refined to really maximize the experience you're having, even if in the long run I wanted a tiny bit more variation in the enemy variety and bosses from run to run. It's a perfect game to pair with a youtube video in the background or your favorite podcast, as while the sound design isn't bad, it's the kind of game that's destined to be the “i'm playing and paying 90% attention” kind of one.

Does it have flaws? I mean, every game does. Some of the swarming nature of certain waves can feel overpowered compared to other waves, seemingly being a stopping point from run to run. Certain powers do feel like they vastly outweigh others ( Time Stop.), but 98% of the game feels really balanced. Sometimes it can be easy to lose your guys on screen thanks to some of the presentation design, and I do wish there was a tiny bit more oompf with the visuals from a over-the-top type display.

Yet, the game also makes you want to keep seeing what happens, and has a one more run mentality that develops. You just want to try again, and even in that repetition, you really don't care. It's the definition of getting hours and hours of gameplay for a few bucks, and if you've even considered the game at this point, throwing a few bucks for hours of fun is most definitely the right decision.

Review Video: https://youtu.be/3jpNhyGGX-c

Lists:
Positives:
  • Strong base gameplay design that focuses on strategy and movement in hectic battlefield organization.
  • 98% well balanced in terms of the design as a whole where you can't abuse certain mechanics and it feels like a lot of time and play testing went into it.
  • Reasonable variety and boons from different robot types allow for interesting robot combinations to experiment with.
  • Good rewards for trying different loadouts and permanent upgrades feel impactful over time.
  • Robot design follows the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principle and does it well.
  • Writing is fun with good jokes and an interesting plot that makes you want to see where it's going.

Negative:
  • Enemy variety could use a tune up in the long run in RNG variation. You'll lose against swarms a lot in the early going, which can be annoying.
  • Just a step under what I'd want for visual flare: specifically with projectiles and combat animation. Almost there, but not quite.
  • A couple of small annoyances regarding presentation (losing robots behind big enemy visuals).

Early Access Review
Target Audience: Those wanting a little bit different from Vampire Survivors. And want to back potential

Summary:

The best word I would describe Bounty of One is potential. There is something here that could eventually build to a game that is a tier behind Vampire Survivors in terms of addiction and playability, and it's really going to be interesting to watch to see how it's going to build over time. The idea of having to stand still to fire does make for an interesting alternate challenge, forcing you to determine when to stop, when to keep moving, and how in order to get over your enemies. Some loadouts can become reasonably fun even if they aren't top tier, and yet there's something always exciting about getting that next upgrade element. It's a game that does get better as you start to get further and further into, and does reward you with playing more hours with more interesting difficulty spikes. It's a game you can definitely lose hours into, and it definitely has a chance to fight with some of the genre if the right upgrades are

Right now, the biggest hurdle has to face is the repetition at the early game, and how many runs can feel very samey in the early going, even with the different characters. Environments for example are very basic and really start to wear you down, especially when you start just having basic colors on the screen with no variety in the environment. The random nature of upgrades is great, and can lead to interesting builds, but some of those builds can be....well annoying. It's troublesome when the game keeps offering you everything but attack power and speed, and there have been several points where boss fights took over 10 minutes, letting me survive but literally fighting what feels like the biggest sponge on the face of the earth. It also doesn't have the pizzaz like others in the genre has from a presentation standpoint: which does make a difference when you are doing repetition. The game really does need to embrace the over the top nature that it could have.

Stream Footage: https://youtu.be/XAV6XTvtzaA

Lists:
Positives:
  • The stand still aspect of offense does make it stand out in strategy and playstyle, seperating it and drawing attention in different ways.
  • Certain builds can be really fun and there's always excitement seeing what upgrade is just around the corner.
  • Certain elements have reasonable balance and it does seem that the game balances the power fantasy with fairness in 90% of cases.
  • Does have an addictive/one more run kind of element when you get into the groove.

Negative:
  • Variation in the early game can start to wear on you, as there needs to be more variety in the big picture. This is on all levels: presentation, sound, and gameplay
  • Certain bad luck can lead to exhausting play sessions with bosses that take 15 minutes to kill, and just leaving you frustrated.
  • However, Certain skills feel way too over powered compared to others even with balance attempts. Certain combos are killer in ways that I feel need to be tweaked.
  • The game begs you to put any other music on in the background, as some of it will drill into your head in bad ways and sometimes don't even really fit what's going on.

Target Audience: Those who want a laid back metroidvania.....or speedrunners.

Summary:

I'm always going to be impressed when a single dev makes a game of this level on Steam, and Islets isn't an exception. There's some good mixups of certain elements of the metroidvania genre, as upgrade pieces being random and actually having some heft to them is pretty cool to see, and there is a cuteness factor to the game, having simple yet eye-appealing designs that feel influenced by creative media like Studio Gibli, but just not having the same level of man power behind it. There's a speed that the game has for veterans of the genre that surprised me as it felt like it was almost designed to speedrun, with gaining speed with movement seemingly being present. There's no one design element that feels like it's really lacking in terms of the overall package for the type of game that Islets is going for. This is not trying to be a difficult or over the top metroidvania, and for some it's definitely not a game that's going to be for them.

The thing is, it's fair in almost every aspect, but that's also a little bit of its curse. It's competent but doesn't really excel in any one area, which means that when it comes to general attention, it's going to get overlooked. It's a game that's good enough to be played and enjoyed, but not one that's forcing you to run out and buy it because there's no killer draw. The action is basic and puts things together in a good arc, spacing out new features over time, but it's also not one that really brings a lot of excitement as well. A lot of the best things are the atmosphere, and if it doesn't vibe with you, there's nothing else that will really get over that.

It's solid. That's good, but you'll need to get it for the right person, or the right price.

Stream Footage: https://youtu.be/K68iKVUuJeU

Lists:
Positives:
  • Great laid-back atmosphere that works with the visuals and setting of the game, despite the whole beast/troubles thing.
  • Upgrade finds being a bit more random is actually nice to see and gave me more reason to seek them out.
  • Movement/Controls feel great, and really feels fast in the right hands.
  • Good curve of new exploration/hazards/tools that keep things going fresh.
  • Familar, yet enough different to make it feel different from its brothers.

Negative:
  • No killer draw. Nothing that makes you sit up and take notice, and makes you go “yeah, I need to play this now.”
  • Can start to feel a tiny repetitive, even if it's not anywhere near the worst in the genre.
  • Wanted a little harder difficulty on the hard side of the scale.

Target Audience: Anyone who likes a great atmosphere, or a good FPS.

Summary:

Not only is Fashion Police Squad a great unique entry in the FPS genre, it's one filled with character and heart. It's easy to look at the subject matter and the surface and see only a game that may be a gimmick of some sort, but that would be a big mistake. The action is great, using the gimmick of specific weaknesses to force you to focus on particular enemies, while you're dodging enemies left and right. I played on hard difficulty, and even as a veteran of the genre I got a good challenge here, dying a reasonable amount but not to the point of horrible frustration. This is all in the backdrop of clever jokes and a great atmosphere: the game does a fantastic job in setting the stage and you really appreciate the level of detail put into the parodies and references. It's a colorful game with a fantastic soundtrack and great sound design, and it's definitely a game that you'll want to put your full attention into.

Really, a lot of my complaints are small: dealing with specific rooms with enemy design that feels a little too cramp, or needing a tweak or two here with the movement on the belt swinging. A bug or two that would cause me to reset a level's progress, but in the big picture, they don't add up to overshadow the game's great pace, design, and overall fun factor. Great for new or veterans players, it's definitely worth your time and money.

Review Video: https://youtu.be/wbmyFy9QArs

Lists:
Positives:
  • Great FPS control and action: going back to the days of early 90s shooters, but with a twist.
  • Themeing around the game, the moments, the references, and the action, is fantastic and you'll appreciate the detail put into everything.
  • Great boss encounters that test your skills and what you've learned to that point.
  • Excellent Sound Design that enhances not only the gameplay, but the immersion of the world.
  • Upbeat music helps the action a lot, worth listening to as background music in general.

Negative:
  • Some of the areas, maybe 15%, could use some refinement as they seem to have too many enemies in a small space.
  • Little bugs here and there (especially with teleporting enemies) can slow progress.
  • Could have maybe used one or two more guns in the big picture.

Target Audience: Anyone who like side scrolling shooters.

Summary:

Really, it's a prototype for a great game in the future, even though the game right now is a good hour or less side scrolling shooter experience that has a good difficulty curve, and fun weapons and enemy variety. It's got a very distinctive style, with visuals that remind of games like Undertale and Helltaker but has its own heart put into it, along with an overly goofy story that's stupid in all the right ways. The music is catchy and the screen does have an explosion of color and effects, but that can start to work against the game in terms of visual clarity over time.

For the hour or so of free game, it's got a good amount of different weapons and challenges, forcing you to re-evaluate how you attack things when you run into issues, and dying will happen but you learn enough to avoid it over time. There's actually really solid platforming level design here as well, not staying on one concept for too long but allowing use of the roll and movement abilities for a lot of straight forward satisfaction. Some of the chaos can be too chaotic at times, but I'd rather it be more chaotic then too little.

Overall, the dev wanted feedback on how the game was and if it was worth going forward with it, and I will say that yes, by all means it's worth finishing this out because you have a great game in the making here.

Lists:
Positives:
  • Goofy story and visuals in all the right ways, earning smiles and laughs.
  • Visually appealing and stands out in a colorful cartoonish way.
  • Fun guns in terms of range, arc angles, and usability.
  • Great level design from a platforming perspective that synergizes well with the movement abilities.
  • Great gun play that forces chaos and precision at the same time.
  • Fantastic music and sound design that complements the main product.

Negative:
  • Visual elements can start to overload the screen and make it hard to decipher what's going on.
  • I mean, that it's not a full game, because I want to play more.

Target Audience: Horror Fans....Who are patient.

Summary:

I honestly wish I could give this game the thumbs up, as the atmosphere of the game and the creepiness of some of the gameplay mechanics is pretty good in the horror genre. The game understands that keeping the player on tilt while not just blasting jump scares at the player. You're waiting for the next issue to come around the corner, and the sound/visual design does a great job of putting you on edge. The story behind it isn't anything special, but the different “stories” that you come across like the drug scenario does want me to push forward. The gameplay is simple but effective, although when it comes to some of the demon/spiritual elements, the game doesn't do the greatest job on the tutorial. The game in essence has all the hallmarks of a great game. So you're probably wondering why I'm giving it a negative review.

Well, the game can't seemingly stop breaking on me, and sometimes it's even hard to tell when the game has broken. Like, the game messes with you, and yes, there are times where your inputs are not being taken in because the game is waiting for you to hit a scripted event. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about scenarios where a rune on a wall literally disappears, so you have no idea what symbol you need to use. Or doesn't even appear in the first place. Or it starts a cutscene and then just leaves you in a black room......forever. On top of that, based on other footage that I've seen, I'm not sure why the symbols aren't always appearing on the corpses heads once everything is ready to go, sometimes the game just decides.....nah. It doesn't help when the ending in the stream clip below......well it's hilarious, I'll give it that, but it points to the game's biggest problem. It's bug prone: and bug prone in a way that doesn't allow me to complete it fairly. That's the only reason why this is getting a negative review, and quite frankly, I'm really hoping that it's a just me scenario. But until that can be proven, I have to tell players to avoid the game....for now.

Stream Clip: https://clips.twitch.tv/AcceptableObservantWalletLeeroyJenkins-2BhCdNdEcIucZCKc

Lists:
Positives:
  • Game's atmosphere does a fantastic job of keeping you on edge in various ways (small things in the background, jumpscares when needed).
  • Mechanics enhance the atmosphere gameplay wise where you're keeping looking over your shoulder.
  • Great sound design to enhance tense moments or make you wonder if something happened down the road.
  • Solid story for scenarios that go hand and hand with gameplay in a lot of ways, makes me want to see more of what it has to offer.
  • Honestly, it has everything package wise for a horror game that I'd want. But.....

Negative:
  • Riddled with bugs that stop progress, not allow you to do actions, and confuse you to the point where you just get frustrated and leave.
  • The major problem on top of that is when the game compounds the bugs with messing with you, you just get frustrated as there's no clear path to fix it or determine what's going on.
  • Model mouth movement is either missing key frames or just is overly sped up, because it can feel unnatural when it's not supposed to feel unnatural. Funny enough, the most normal is when the demons are involved.
  • A lack of clarification of some mechanics, especially with the demon naming/symbols on the head lead to confusion on if you're missing a step (and may be tied to the bugs).

Target Audience: Strategy Players needing a background game

Summary:

A solid game in the genre that won't blow you away in terms of presentation or sophisticated gameplay, but will gets a return of hours of strategy and does reward game knowledge and smart play. You can see that I got the hours out of the game before launch, and I did appreciate the different monster types and benefits they have, and there's a good balance between the different strengths and weaknesses to force you to change up the strategy, but enough rope in the overall upgrade system to still allow newer/less skilled players in the long haul to be able to succeed. There's ok models that do a good job of small details, and the game is easy to have hours pass on while you're watching a youtube video in the background.

Granted, the game could do more in the long run to help the player out for both a usability and gameplay standpoint. Starting with the same units and no different general options does get a little bit old over time, and the game does get a little visually messy in combat as the effects can overwhelm everything else. Some variety in the environment would also be nice, but the biggest thing holding it back is the usability of the UI/controls. Certain decisions on how to drag pieces/what it allows can get annoying/frustrating, and some more hot keys on buying units/placing units would go a LONG way to help that.

Overall, nothing that will change the mind of those who have played auto-battlers and not liked them in the past, but a good one for those who want a bit of strategy and don't want to break the bank while doing it.

Review Video: https://youtu.be/z24jsD9iEwo

It should be noted that some have reported their graphics cards overheating with the game. While I didn't see this in my tests on both my main PC and laptop, it should be noted for those interested in the game.

Lists:
Positives:
  • Reasonable variety in base units/items/types that can lead to different strategies and rewards smart play.
  • General mechanic does lead to some interesting scenarios and changes in strategy.
  • Game's upgrade system allows for reasons to keep playing for different experiences/skill levels and does a good job of getting more length out of the game.
  • For the most part, the game's different strategies seem reasonably planned and there's enough randomization to not allow for just one “ultimate” strategy.
  • Do like the lack of interaction during the gameplay other then a spell, staying true as an auto battler and balancing things well.
  • Models are good with small details that stand out.

Negative:
  • UI/Controls could use additional bindable keys and logic to deal with some of the more frustrating aspects, mostly focusing on ease of use.
  • The lack of variety on the general and starting with the same buyable units does negative impact the game over time.
  • Visuals can get muddied in battle with all the effects (especially in the mid to late game), and some variety on the environments would have gone a long way to help runs not feel repetitive.

Target Audience: Patient Gamers Very Patient.

Summary:

You can see the number of reviews that I have on my steam profile, and rest assured that have been games that I've loved, and games that I've hated over the years. In that time, I've thought that I've learned to be patient in letting a game show what it's design is, what positives that it can have, and to walk a mile in both the developers and gamer's shoes. Neon Blight tested that very quickly, to the point where I almost consider my reaction to it a failure: it frustrated me from the get go, and only seemed to poke me in ways that grew that frustration. To say that my first 90 minutes of the game was not a positive experience would be an understatement.

Let me start off by this: the game had a lot of bugs, both small and big. There are bugs where “NPCs” will walk in place then teleport in town. Ok, annoying, but a little funny. There's bugs where coins that drop fall into the wall, not allowing you to grab it. Can't go through a specific area entrance, but can go the other way on it? Ok, really annoying, and starting to effect the gameplay. Then there's the game crashing, to the point that Visual C++ libraries are so messed up that I have to reboot (which happened during a stream by the way). It felt like I was fighting the game at every corner, and there's some baffleing decisions at times. Having a confirmation input in binding the keys to be a key that you are currently binding is......well it makes logical sense, but goes against most standard practices, and it doesn't help that the game doesn't teach you that and you have to figure that out yourself. In fact, most everything you have to figure out yourself, which in a game that has selling/specific mechanics that makes you wonder if the game is bugged, that's a problem.

Now, I wish I could say that if the bugs are polished out that you'd have something interesting here with the Recettear like gameplay, but even that would be stretching it. Enemies have pretty standard patterns and can become very repetitive very quickly: you start to feel the grind almost immediately. The early nature of enemies feeling very bullet spongy doesn't help the limited AI here, it makes you feel like you're fighting clone #7289 and there's another 1000000 behind it. Sure, the idea of finding interesting guns and selling them and balancing that is interesting, but the economy feels a bit off as well (a upgrade costing so much in comparison to what you can sell feels very very off). Sure, the game has some good animation and pixel art at times, but it also didn't seem to play music during battle (which felt like a bug?) and lacked impactful sound design.

Like, there's a possibility that the game could start to open up and really get interesting, but the pain of the first 90 minutes makes me not want to see it. It feels like I'm pulling teeth trying to enjoy it, and that's something I can't recommend.

Stream Footage: https://youtu.be/3B0bcTnskgo

Lists:
Positives:
  • Base shooting and controls are fine.
  • Some OK visuals, some good animation work for pixel artwork.
  • Could open up to an interesting gameplay cycle at some point.

Negative:
  • Extremely buggy on all sorts of levels, not only effecting gameplay but causing massive problems with Visual C++ libraries that can force a reboot.
  • Got repetitive quickly and felt more of a chore to deal with combat then actually fight it.
  • Sound/Music design feels like it bugged out and didn't play much of it especially during combat. Lackluster.
  • Story feels like someone took a book and ripped out random pages: like you're skipping over several key moments and you're supposed to just figure it out.
  • Feel like I have to adapt to the game's quirks (2 monitor setups won't key the mouse bound to the window so you can click out of it in full screen, the weirdness of trying to bind keys) and feels unnecessary.
  • Lack of tutorials on basic elements can confuse you and frustrate you even more.

Target Audience: Strategy Gamers.....eventually.

Summary:

The problem here is simple: While the first few runs of the game seemed alright, something happens with the balance that throws it out the window, specifically when you get through the first run. Up to that point, the game is simple and going through the meeple placing is simple, but requires good strategy. Granted, there are some times where you can exploit certain situations, like using the healing tree and defending, but when the game's balance feels right, things can be interesting with the multi lane and different meeple placements. It's simple, but effective. The presentation is nice, but can be confusing at times (the rooms in particular). It's a good introduction into meeple like games I suppose....but then after the first run, things fall apart.

I'm not sure what happens specifically, but after doing a few permanent upgrades, you start runs with 4/5 enemies that start able to attack incredibly strongly, to the point where you can't even get past the first set of enemies. It's almost like the game thinks it's on the second set of enemies for the rest of the new runs, and you can't even make progress to the permanent upgrades, you die immediately. It's frustrating, and even if you get lucky and get only two enemies and can somehow deal with it, then the next fight is 5/6 enemies.

It doesn't help there are some items that I would expect (confirmation click sounds?) for the strategy elements, but really, its the balance that's the major problem here, and I can't really even look at the middle/end game because of that.

Lists:
Positives:
  • Basic strategy elements work when balanced, leads to interesting decisions.
  • Simple yet effective meeple gameplay.
  • Interesting color and presentation that is still easy to get information out of.

Negative:
  • Balance goes out the window with the roguelite nature and permanent upgrades. Gets to the point where you don't want to play anymore. Restarted repeatedly to confirm this.
  • No sound cues for clicks feels like a mistake.
  • Music is....odd.
