FlatOut is a genuine classic from 2005 that still holds up better than you'd expect — the physics engine was revolutionary at the time and honestly puts a lot of modern arcade racers to shame. The ragdoll mechanic where your driver flies through the windshield never gets old, and the variety of tracks and bonus minigames like ragdoll bowling keep things entertaining. That said, it's rougher than its sequel in almost every way: the career structure is bare-bones, rubber-banding AI can be infuriating, and a stray barrel will send you spinning into last place in ways that feel more cheap than fun. If you grew up with this on PS2 or the original Xbox, the nostalgia hit is real and the current updates adding widescreen and controller support are a welcome surprise. Pick up FlatOut 2 first, but if you want the original piece of history at its usual sale price of about a dollar, it's worth experiencing where it all started.
