About

Hey, I’m Steve! 👋

I’m a front-end developer by profession and love everything about the fluke that is the web. If it weren’t apparent, I’m obsessed with computers, video games, and the web. My hobbies tend to feed into one of these obsessions—like my bout of waffle making that ended in an incredibly dumb website to rid the world of sub-par waffles. Or the time I was really into Destiny 2 and made a website to track activities (RIP).

I’m a big fan of big fans. Excitement is contagious and I’m always interested in what someone is passionate about and likes to nerd out on. In an effort to be a well-rounded adult that doesn’t feel the need to be extremely online, I’ve more recently found interests in cooking, photography, guitar, plants, and exercising (weightlifting, running, biking, and racquetball).

I’m a tinkerer and like to have projects to keep me busy. As my wife would say: I have lots of fires in the kitchen—pretty sure she meant irons in the fire, but let’s be honest the former is closer to reality.

This is where most people list their various accomplishments and accolades—to which I have none. I suppose I did win an award of sorts back in college for a game I created. I’m pretty sure all it landed me was an interview with the college newspaper where I enthusiastically expressed why video games are the best artistic medium, requiring so many disciplines coming together to make something that the player gets to be a part of and interact with in a way most other mediums can’t do (hey, the web is similar, but I wasn’t into it then). She then wrote how I was from Port Heron (nope) and that people liked my game (yep)—nothing about the game itself or the importance of video games and their incredible impact on my life.

I’m incredibly lucky to have found my wife, Sam, early in life. We just get along and things between us are easy. She reaps the benefit of (puts up with) my insanity in finding the perfect product for any given job (sorry about all the toaster ovens and speakers, dear). I get appointments scheduled just by complaining a bit about my ailments.

We had our daughter, Zoe, a little over a year and a half ago now and it’s been a rollercoaster. She’s a ton of fun, but no one does a good job of describing how challenging it is to be an attentive, patient parent (this is one of the larger kitchen fires at the moment).

There have been enough instances in the past few years that I’ve wished I’d had a place that I could write about something—whether it be a product, API, interests, or personal news. Twitter met that need, until it was bought and gutted. While I didn’t post all much, it was an important lesson to learn that if you care about words you write, you ought to trust who owns the platform.

This is my platform to talk about whatever it is I’m interested in at any given time. If you’d like to follow along, subscribe to my RSS feed!

Technical Details

The site was built using Astro, which gets my official okey dokey. It’s well thought out, flexible, and doesn’t take a hard stance in the never ending war of client-side vs server-side rendering—both have their place (although you probably are doing too much on the client side).😄

My social media vice used to be Twitter (RIP), but since it’s implosion I’ve just kind of reserved my username at the various places and promptly stopped using them. I still check these ones very occasionally:

Finally, I have my résumé available to peruse if you’d like to hire me! I am currently looking!
