Being rather pragmatic, I solved this problem by removing italics > from all styles. ;-) I also used to see this with certain VM's prior to the AntiAlias plugin. It hasn't really been a problem of late. However, this problem is exacerbated by the AA plugin if the option to use fractional font metrics is selected. I would try not using that option, or removing the plugin as a first pass at fixing the problem.
