once you change that, it is always safest to mv .config xy make mrproper mv xy .config make oldconfig I've seen that error, just can't remember what it is. ron |

Hello Ron,
Thank you for your quick suggestion.
Do you mean
Loadable module support -> Enable loadable module support -> Set
version informaiton of all module symbols
in configuration of linux kernel ? If so, it does not work as follow.
$ grep MOD .config
CONFIG_MODULES=y
# CONFIG_MODVERSIONS is not set
CONFIG_KMOD=y
$ make vmlinux
....
--end-group \
-o vmlinux
drivers/video/video.o(.data+0x1bd4): undefined reference to `local symbols in discarded section .text.exit'
make: *** [vmlinux] Error 1
-caz

Hello,
When I tried to compile linux kernel 2.4.19 for k7sem(i386
architecture), I had following linker error.
--end-group \
-o vmlinux
drivers/video/video.o(.data+0x1bd4): undefined reference to `local symbols in discarded section .text.exit'
make: *** [vmlinux] Error 1
It was caused by the declaration of
static struct pci_driver sisfb_pci_driver = {
name: SISFB_MODULE_NAME,
id_table: sisfb_pci_tbl,
probe: sisfb_probe,
remove: sisfb_remove,
};
If it were
static struct pci_driver sisfb_pci_driver = {
name: SISFB_MODULE_NAME,
id_table: sisfb_pci_tbl,
probe: sisfb_probe,
// remove: sisfb_remove,
remove: __devexit_p(sisfb_remove),
};
I don't have an error. So the patch is
$ cd drivers/video/sis
$ diff sisfb_lite-0.c sisfb_lite.c
1022c1022
< remove: sisfb_remove,
---
> remove: __devexit_p(sisfb_remove),

So no symbols should be involved. It appears you are doing a SMP build. Which platform is this on again? I'm the primary architect for the smp code but I do't quite enough information to give a helpful explanation. > Let's move this discussion to linuxbios after this message. Sounds good. Hello, All, I downloaded and try to configure Linux bios for a motherboard. While I compiling the I got the following error linuxbios.o: In function `start_cpu': linuxbios.o(.text+0x611): undefined reference to `_secondary_start' Since LinuxBios links with the Linux kernel, I tried to look for _secondary_start (defined as extern in the code) in the Linux code and in the Linux bios code. I could not find any definition. I could _secondary_start in arch/i386/ppc, I am currently using 2.4.19-pre10 as my Linux source base. What have I done incorrectly? Thanks, Balbir Singh. |

The architecture is documented, but the code they're using isn't easily available, I got a mail from Bari Ari yesterday saying that they now include source code for the VSMs with "XpressLoader 3.3" which is cool, if they allow you to make opensource drivers using what you learn from it. > Actually, to support audio properly (which the board I'm > working on doesn't have), I think some VSA or at least SMM support is > needed, but I'll climb that mountain when I get to it. I think so too. It is at least needed for the NSC drivers to work. > So I'm feeling rather confident that with the LinuxBIOS stuff I've > written so far, I can get a Linux kernel running, and then the Linux > kernel can have native drivers that handle video, audio, and all the > other interesting features of the SC2200. Most of the features, if not all, of the SC1200 work in Linux, with the right blend of initialization code and drivers. (Stay away from the National DP83815 driver, it sucks, use natsemi from Donald Becker&co instead) Then there's the design. Lots of National software assume you're running as root and not only allow but require you to poke around at physical addresses on the bus from userspace via a neat module. This needs to be fixed, however not neccessarily here. //Peter -- irc: CareBear\ irl: Peter Stuge |

I have quite the opposite experience with National, they have been very helpful and have provided me with a lot of documentation (the SC2200 data book, errata and some reference drivers). I have signed an NDA with National, but before I did that, I got a statement from them that it is ok for me to publish Open Source drivers that are created from the information I've got under the NDA. This is perfectly fine with me. Anyways, it's always possible to get to the information some other way if one wants to. For example, I just wrote a small program that dumps the contents of the display controller registers. Then I booted using the Insyde BIOS, and ran my little program. The next step was to do a cold boot (power off, wait a few seconds, power on) using LinuxBIOS so that the display controller is totally uninitialised. Finally I wrote another small program to program the display controller with the settings I had recorded. This way I just managed to get a 640x480, truecolor framebuffer running under Linux, without really having to understand anything about what goes into the display controller registers. (I think the same trick has been used a lot by the XFree86 people, set up the display running Windows, dump the clock chip settings and do the same thing under Linux). Of course, this was just a quick hack to see how much work is needed to get video running on the SC2200, so I am going to sit down and read the documentation and figure out what these values mean. It's much nicer to know what's going on, but it's not really neccesary to have the documentation to get something working. What I'm trying to say is that if it's important enough, somebody will write a driver, the only question is if the manufacturer will get a good reputation as a Linux-friendly company or not. Also, the quality of the driver will probably be a lot higher when the documentation is available. As for the VSA stuff, it does seem to be documented in the data book, but I'm not sure how complete the documentation is; there might be pieces missing from it. However, I'm probably going to avoid VSA as much as possible. VSA is mostly used to emulate legacy hardware, and that's not neccesary if I can write a Linux driver with native support instead. Actually, to support audio properly (which the board I'm working on doesn't have), I think some VSA or at least SMM support is needed, but I'll climb that mountain when I get to it. So I'm feeling rather confident that with the LinuxBIOS stuff I've written so far, I can get a Linux kernel running, and then the Linux kernel can have native drivers that handle video, audio, and all the other interesting features of the SC2200. I must admit that I might not release everything as Open Source yet, some drivers might have to be binary-only Linux modules for a while, if I can make money that way by selling an exclusive right to a client. I would prefer to publish everything as Open Source, but it's not always possible. /Christer -- "Just how much can I get away with and still go to heaven?" |
