[Vis5d-users] RE: tovis5d problem with graupel

Hi Elizabeth,

I also got the error that you are referring to in comment (2) below concerning the graupel field, and I know for sure my MMOUT_DOMAIN file does contain graupel based on the microphysics parameterization I chose.  I edited the tovis5d.csh file to include GRAUPEL in the discard_fields line and I got my tovis5d code to work - I get the usual message at the end of the tovis5d.log file saying the program "normally ended".  When I don't include GRAUPEL in the discard_fields line I get the error you describe below.  It sounds like you have already done this - you say you have taken graupel out - so not sure what the problem might be.

I was wondering if anyone else has ran into the graupel problem - and what the bug fix is if they have encountered it?  I am working with the tovis5d code available from the NCAR MM5 homepage.

I am trying to view MM5 output and have previously not had a problem. I am
trying to view 1km horizontal resolution output (using the 30sec terrain
data, 23 levels, 3sec time period on a Sun Ultra 10 workstation) over a
region in California/Nevada. I am using the precompiled vis5d-5.2 version
for the Sun. No matter which way I attempt to convert the MM5 output  Vis5d
format I get errors. Any help would be much appreciated.

Here are the details.
1) Using RIP to generate a vis5d file I get the messages:
 When I try to view the file using Vis5d I get the error message:
Too many rows: 201 (200 is maximum)
Too many columns: 315 (200 is maximum)
Error in v5d CreateSimpleFile: unable to cerate vis.v5d file

2) Using TOVIS5d (the MM5 to Vis5d conversion program):
*We cannot fine variable <GRAU> in get_var
* We cannot get <GRAU> from i3dunit=93
Please check file list and rerun

which I have taken GRAU out but still get this message. when I try to view
the file in Vis5d anyway I get the message:
Hint: To run Vis5d more efficiently try setting vis5d.file to '-mbs192'.
I can view only a few items (topography, map, headwind, etc.).When I try to
view, for example, head wind, I get the warnings:
WARNING: Memory is full, graphics may be discarded
WARNING: Insufficient memory for volume rendering (18931185 bytes needed).
then I get a segmentation fault when I try to view anything but a few
parameters.
