Thank you very much for the helpful solution.
However, there appears to be a problem with v5dedit.
Using v5dedit to change the variable names seems to add some sort of
carriage-return character (or some whitespace char) at the end of the
new variable name. This shows up in the variable list in the vis5d
control panel. This is okay, but I cannot specify the new variable
names as 'wind' or 'wind2' vectors (either at the cmd line or by using
the "UVW" button on the vis5d control panel). After specifying the wind
vectors and clicking 'ok', I don't see the wind vector vars when I press
the "UVW" button again.
Even changing the wind var names to U, V, U2, V2, (via v5dedit) does not
help.
Any way to get around this apart from regenerating the v5d file from
scratch with new variable names?
