VeraCrypt 1.26.27 beta: Issue with Argon2id containers.
Can I recover the files somehow? It was quick format and I did not write anything on it since then. Could anyone help me step by step?
Strange. It just so happens that I mount my volume for portable browsing on the H drive as well. I even tried the experiment on my Win10 laptop with the same setup. It still doesn't recognize LO. Firefox also doesn't keep me logged in. I was logged in here before unmounting and shutting down before, and had clicked on "remember me". I was logged out when I came back. Would you happen to have experience with Linux? I've been getting so fed up with the way things work with Microsoft lately then I'm...
This behaviour persists after an unmount/mount of the the VC volume, and a shutdown/start of the PC, and mount of the VC volume.
LibreOffice Writer launches OK whenever I click on the .docx file now. I wonder whether your issue may be something to do with where LibreOffice is installed?
I can't reproduce your issue with LibreOffice Writer. I created a 25GB test VC volume on a secondary W11 PC that has no 'Office' sofware on it at all, on the E: drive, and mounted it to H:, and installed LibreOfficePortable to folder 'LibreOffice'. (Note: I never accept the pointless default behaviour of 'Portable Apps' installers - .paf.exe files - of installing the sofware in a subfolder of the folder I say I want it installed in, using the apps name ie 'LibreOfficePortable' in this case.) I then...
I'm actually using 2 different laptops. The Dell uses Win10 (and has been having other issues) and my Lenovo was upgraded to Win11 a few weeks ago. I have them both set up the same way and have actually had better results with the Lenovo. It seems to retain autofill and passwords better than the Dell does. And yes, I'm using the portable versions of Firefox. I tried it originally with Chrome when I wrote the OP, but was having even worse results. One issue is being able to get it to recognize LibreOffice,...
I completely understand your frustration at upgrading from 1.25.x to 1.26.x and not being aware of the security change that impacted accessing your volume(s) with your Smart Cards and troubleshooting what was causing the "the operation was blocked as the process prohibits dynamic code generation source: Veracrypt:security token:init library 534" error message. I do not think that is up to anyone but the user. We will have to agree to disagree. I already stated there will be decisions where security...
I dismounted the drive from the router connected it to the computer an ran VeraCrypt as administrator. Then the encrypted file was mounted. It would perhaps haved worked as well with the drive still connected to the router.
Yes, I agree with the disagree to thing. I hope I have kept this civil, and as earlier stated I have the utmost respect for Mounir. I was anyway getting new smart cards (easier said than done) from Microcosm.uk. I wrote to them about this matter, and they said they did not know because the module was made by an OEM (Feitian). I will update on how this works out, if anyone's interested. Anyway, thanks for your feedback, and I would probably have said the same, if not personally affected by this.

I do not think that is up to anyone but the user. Yes, in the case of Windows hardware changes, their is little choice and if Veracrypt cannot use modules with dcg due to MS security policies, then fine. However, that does not seem to be the case, according to MI: 'Throughout my extensive testing with major PKCS#11 libraries, I did not encounter this unusual behavior. Furthermore, it's uncommon and somewhat suspicious for a PKCS#11 library to modify executable code at runtime.' Obviously, the extensive...
Security decisions made by Mounir are made in the best interests of the users of VeraCrypt while avoiding options to allow users to override the necessary changes for security. The decisions made are not always going to be popular. For example, Microsoft's Win 11 hardware requirements that are causing people to purchase new PC's due to older hardware's security vulnerabilities. This is impacts me and I am not happy about Microsoft's decision. However, I understand why Microsoft had to make that decision...

The blocking of pkcs#11, which is told to us via the error message: 'The operation was blocked as the process prohibits dynamic code generation' is not, imho, Mounir's decision to make. In my case the ase dll was suddenly blocked, though I'd been using it for years! I get that MI thinks dynamic code generation is terribly dangerous, and he might be right; however, he has no right to mess up peoples' veracrypts. If I might suggest, the error could still occur, but there is a choice for the user to...

What operating system/version are you running? And are you using 'Portable Apps' versions of Chrome and Libre Office? I may be able to help troubleshoot this by experimentation - seeing if I can reproduce your issues, and what steps might resolve it. I have run almost my entire computing activites for years now using portable software installed in VC container files. I use Firefox as a browser, but have Chrome available to test; I use LibreOffice. My first thought is, W11 is much more 'hostile' to...
My PC is Windows 10 Pro 64-bit 22H2 with latest OS patches and Windows Defender using VeraCrypt beta 1.26.27 version. But I tried several times with the same result, the list box did not select the correct item NTFS. On Windows, the Large Files = Yes has never used NTFS and instead defaults to exFAT since exFAT is compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it a popular choice for cross-platform use. I prefer to use NTFS on Windows due to the advantages NTFS provides over exFAT. You can Google...

This is a lot harder than I thought. But if anyone knows of a shop in europe that sells veracrypt compatible smart cards (pkcs#11), together with the middleware (hopefully free), it would be much appreciated.

Ok, that is strange. I'm running Windows 11 Pro 24H2, and suspect some sort of ms 'security' might mess stuff up. But I tried several times with the same result, the list box did not select the correct item NTFS.

After hearing how I should install a portable browser inside a VC container to keep my browsing data private, I've done that, but keep running into problems. On top of Chrome losing autofill and passwords and not keeping me logged into accounts after unmounting and then remounting, I also can't readily open an office app called LibreOffice by simply clicking on a document that should be able to be opened in it. Not a big deal, but v1.26.24 does not choose the correct formatting. When 'large files' are selected in create volume, the default choice becomes Fat32.
Hi, When trying to create an encrypted partition, get an 'access is denied' error. Source:volTransformThreadFunction:2769 The partition resides on an external Nvme connected by thunderbolt. EDIT - this was due to using an older version of VC; v1.26.24 does not give any error.

Hello, please explain the reasons of the following problem. I can mount, but I can not access to files in Veracrypt container. There is error when opening partition: "no access, reached the end of the file." But When I have changed the letter for mounting, Veracrypt mounted container and there was message about file system errors after incorrect dismount. I could copy files. The matter is. One time I mounted veracrypt container as usual drive in Windows 10. There are No hidden system in mounted file....

So when trying to select the aseCardCryptoCSP.dll for the pkcs11 module, get an error 'The operation was blocked as the process prohibits dynamic code generation' and 'source: Veracrypt:security token:init library 534'. This occurs on both win 10 and 11, yet 1.25 worked in both win versions. EDIT - ok, so it's a new security feature by VC. Nothing to do but use a different library/card.

title says it all. also tried windows key, typed veracrypt. samw result as in title Several hours later the problem went away. I blame Windows, but don't have real proof. Let's assume (and hope) it was a one-time glitch and close this report.

I have a veracrypt file and I put half of its storage as a hidden partition. I want to write and read in both partitions. it seems that writing in the hidden partition doesnt affect the outer partition at all because it is encapsulated inside of the outer partition, but what about writing in the outer partition? there is an option to prevent damage to the hidden partition while you write in the outer partition (you put here your hidden partition password). As long as I check this option every time...
Not sure if this is a recommended approach, but you could use the windows tool cipher.exe to wipe the free space in the volume after you have transferred your files. I believe it does, or there is an option to have it write random data to the free space. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-server/certificates-and-public-key-infrastructure-pki/use-cipher-to-overwrite-deleted-data Or you could make a veracrypt file container inside the partition the size of the free space, let it...

Hi all Related to an earlier post of mine. I've now created a brand new (smaller) container into which I have put a pdf and an Excel file. FWIW the container is stored on a Linux box and accessed from Windows 11. I can mount the container and do whatever I need but if I leave it mounted and come back to it an hour or so later - and then close down all apps that were using it (acrobat, explorer etc) and even wait for a few minutes - I' still get the error that I can't unmount it because something...

I realize I don't have to have an encrypted disk to see the Veracrypt icon--as I noted about my Windows 8.1, which is unencrypted and runs Veracrypt with the icon in the tray on login. I am familiar with how the hidden icons work. Veracrypt is in the Startup applications listing. Veracrypt is in the my very limited notifications listing. As a system administrator, I love tracking down weird issues. My system is heavily locked down, so it could be one of my security settings. No matter. If I get too...

@pasca1261 You do not have to encrypt the OS partition in order to have the VeraCrypt icon show-up in the System Tray's in the hidden area ^ since you have the two start VeraCrypt background options I posted enabled. But I miss in VeraCrypt a function/menu "format/encrypt free space only". Where is it? There is no VeraCrypt option after you have formatted the volume to wipe the free space. You have to allow wiping the free space during the VeraCrypt format and select the number of wipes you want to perform. The purchased HDD should be already formatted for Windows with one large partition using NTFS for the entire drive. Use Window Create and format hard disk partitions tools to view the disk partition is already...

Yes. I am aware of the hidden icons. The Veracrypt icon does not show up until I click on the shortcut in my Start Menu. I can live with it until I encrypt the 0 drive. Thank you very much for your assistance. Learned something out of it.

Following your directions, I was able to get the screenshot of Preferences from the Windows 11 desktop. I forgot I have an old unencrypted Windows 8.1 running with the same Preferences settings as the Windows 11. On the Windows 8.1, the Veracrypt application runs immediately minimized in the service tray, so I don't see why the Windows 11 Pro should be different. Maybe you do. Thank you..
I bought a new external 8TB USB hard disk for backup purposes and would like to encrypt it completely with Veracrypt. Or should I create a logical partition first and then convert this partition onto a VC volume? I have a second externaL backup USB hard disk. Thank you. That explains exactly why the service doesn't run. I can't take an image of the Preferences, since I always set up Veracrypt with screenshots prohibited. I'm assuming the reason Veracrypt doesn't start minimized is because the disc is not encrypted. I can deal with what I thought was an anomaly until I encrypt the SSD. Thank you for your helpful response.

I've used Veracrypt for years on all my PCs and this is the first issue I've ever encountered. I recently installed 1.26.24 on a Windows 11 23H2 Pro with no disc encrypted. Veracrypt does not start minimized in my system tray (as is the case with all my other PCs, which are encrypted) and the VeraCryptSystemFavorites service does not appear, even though I have listed Favorites. Hi I've been using Veracrypt (exFAT container file is hosted on a Linux box but the majority of the files are from Windows) for many years and it works very well. Recently, and I don't think I've made any changes that would affect it, I'm having problems saving files after a period of inactivity. It's not a timeout in the sense that the container's still mounted but, for example, if I have an Excel (or Word or pdf) file open which I've saved in the morning, I return to it in the afternoon, make a...
Had the same issue "Booting..." with win 11 pro N 25H2 installed on a stick as windows to go ( rufus ). In a second attempt, applying the encryption before any system changes, configuration or connecting to the internet! it worked, first the "boot test" booting into win and then encrypting and booting from encrypted stick. Assume this will not work, else you'd have got reactions. What I tried and found working is opening sticks encrypted in total with veracrypt portable 1.25.9 in linux with "sudo cryptsetup --type tcrypt open ..." . Thus assume there could be some option how to encrypt in Linux which provides option to open by Veracrypt? But haven't tried yet.

Provides provable security guarantees Eliminates all mathematical correlations Protects the master key from partial exposure Resists a broader range of attack types Although the AI is long, it does not mean it is erroneous. HKDF can indeed enhance security. Although it is currently sufficient, since we are using cascading, we need to achieve the highest level of security.
AI is good at producing lots of text while leaving the question unanswered. It will provide an equally detailed answer arguing that PBKDF2 and HKDF provide similar strength security.
The so-called “partial leakage” in today’s design is not a leak of an independent piece; it is the disclosure of a fixed slice of one single blob. True independence—where leaking one key leaves the others completely untouched—requires HKDF, because HKDF removes both “position linkage” and “mathematical derivability” among the keys. Clarify the “fake independence” of the current scheme: these are not independent parts, just fixed fragments of the same string. You may think that “leaking one cipher’s...
