vegastrike.exe silently crashes when launched on 64-bit Windows 7. setup.exe also silently crashes when any option is selected.
System details:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
ATI Radeon HD 4800
Realtek HD Audio
This is actually a mac running windows, so I'll try running .5.1 for mac when it comes out.

@submitter: if you can run vegastrike.exe through a debugger (there are many free ones, OllyDbg, WinDbg, etc) and post a stacktrace of the crash, it would help a lot.
There's a similar bug that is worked around by disabling shaders - give it a try. If disabling shaders fixes the issue, it may be fixed already (in SVN trunk).
How do I disable the shaders?
Running setup.exe, there's a "Shader" option you can set to "no shader"
setup.exe silently crashes whenever I change anything.
Oh, sorry, I thought you meant the installer - but no, I see you meant vssetup.
Ok, then you could try editing vegastrike.config by hand, look around the forums there are threads about how to edit it.
Though if setup.exe crashes, I suspect something's very wrong - what about getting a stacktrace of setup.exe?
It turns out, setup.exe runs in XP SP2 compatibility mode, but disabling shaders doesn't fix the problem.
I don't really have enough experience to even know how to produce a stacktrace, though.

Hi,
I have a similar problem on 32-bit Vista - the game crashes on startup; and changing any option in the setup utility causes it to crash too.
If I right click either vega-strike or it's setup utility and select "run as administrator" (and then click the "allow" button in the obligatory UAC dialog box), then everything works as it should. That's what I've been doing ever since I tried it.

I had a similar problem when I tried to startup the game after a successful installation without any errors. Had to "run as admin" before I can even run the game. Or else I will have a silent crash with nothing appearing.
Win 7 Ult 64 bits / 8GB Ram, ATI 42xx series card / latest drivers.
7 months old and a fix (working?) was passed along. If it did not fix the problem I will reopen this ticket or the original submitter can open a new ticket. We really need someone with a mac who can help develop on the mac platform...
