When I turn on turret AI (both normal and FAW modes tested) my turrets (specifically the two turretpdlong turrets on a Goddard) aim at my selected target fine, but fail to shoot at it. I tried entering one of the turrets and it would move and shoot fine manually. I then noticed that it was possible to activate turret AI on that subunit, which I tried, causing its subunit (turretpdlonggun IIRC) to aim and fire at my selected target, although it would only aim up and down since only the turretpdlonggun had AI turned on.
I'm using Mac OS 10.5.5 and Vega Strike 0.5.0.

What "target line"? there's TurretTargetKey (feed your target to the turret) and TurretPickTargetKey (like PickTargetKey, but for turrets)
What target? If point defence vs. ship, possibly, AI roles.
Do the same turrets fire at another ship's turrets? Kierkegaard has turretpdlong and turretbeam, they seem to be choosy sometimes.
Also, possibly they fire, but it's not rendered (happens frequently with lasers too).
