This set is dedicated to Tåhlequåh, a female orca and mother who has been carrying her deceased calf for more than a week now. Tåhlequåh previously made headlines in 2018 when she pushed the body of her calf around the Salish Sea for 17 days for over 1600km in a powerful act of grieving. This extraordinary journey highlights the profound emotional depth of orcas and has captivated the world's attention as a symbol of the endangered species' struggle for survival. Scientists have noted that while orcas do show mourning behaviors, Tahlequah's prolonged journey with her 300-pound calf is an outlier. With only 73 Southern Resident orcas remaining, the loss of calves like hers has devastating implications for the species, which faces threats from dwindling prey and environmental hazards.
