Journ Doe is a professional journalist and a student in pursuit of my honours degree in Journalism and Media studies at Wits University. By day, I’m an executive producer at eNCA, a 24-hour news television channel based in Sandton, Johannesburg. EPing – as it is sometimes called – is a high pressure editorial and technical management job in which I serve as final gatekeeper before and as news is aired. I really enjoy my role in production, behind the scenes. I’m camera-shy and rather cagey around people I’m not familiar with hence I could never be a successful reporter in the television medium but I’m completely comfortable at my current role. Being a bit of a workaholic, I somehow manage to find time to do some freelance writing between shifts and family life. My freelance work is mostly on business technology and socio-economics. I contribute African tech content to online portals such as US-based ICT data network, IDG Connect and HubPages where I write under the alias, Sirius Centauri (I’m fascinated and weirdly obsessed by all things related to astronomy, so I adopted a star). Just over a year ago, I co-founded a content and web development start-up called Penoptic Press. My business partner (a seasoned web developer and satellite engineer) and I, help small businesses launch their brands online through the creation of websites, copywriting, and ‘biztech’ multimedia. I focus on multimedia and content development; he on web development, branding and business strategy. My interests include reading, travel, alternative arts, film, history, culture, esoteric subjects, philosophy and technology. Most of all, I love music. Having been fortunate enough to have been an artist (emcee and dj) in my previous life – before I began what may be an endless hiatus – I see writing as an extension who I am. Before my sabbatical, my musical journey took me to places like New York and Philadelphia where I had the opportunity to open shows for some world renowned artists the likes of the late Amy Winehouse, The Roots and Jill Scott to name but a few. At the moment though, I’m entirely focused on raising my son as well as furthering my studies. This is the first step towards my vision of obtaining an MBA before I fully venture into the world of business.
