CHATEO 1: JOE CAPPS

Comment by Juanita

En total, creo que te puedes dar más crédito. Hablas de una manera cuidadosa, pero tu conversación es fluida y clara. Ten confianza en ti mismo. :)

GOALS I hope that, and believe that, the next Chateo will be more comfortable between me and my partner. I hope to reduce the length and quantity of pauses I experience in my next conversation. I will try to study vocabulary related the prompts that involve material I don’t commonly speak about in Spanish. Have questions for Elian to help me after reviewing my next Chateo.

GRAMMAR - “Una de la mejor cosas” - I was trying to say the use of technology in school is one of the best uses for it. I should have said uno de los mejores usos de la tecnología. I also didn’t know how to say that “You don’t have to worry about getting other people sick”. I believe I should have said “No se tiene que preocupar de enfermar a los compañeros de clase.” I need advice on this one.

VOCABULARY - “Ver nuestras vidas sin nuestro permiso” - I did not know how to say “People can use technology to spy on us, but I believe I was able to circumlocute around that lapse and maintain good fluidity to the speech, while also making proper use of subjunctive and gender/number matching with personal pronouns. Espiar is the verb I should have used.

TEXT TYPE - Met Expectations - I believe I was able to describe my views on technology in our lives clearly, in good paragraph form and sustained a good pace while making proper use of the subjunctive and gender/number matching with personal pronouns.

VOCABULARY - I did not know the word for "battle" so I started trying to explain a scene from the Matrix movie without saying it. It caused me to conjugate entrar incorrectly at the beginning because I was focused on how to describe the subsequent parts of the scene.

GRAMMAR - I was explaining why the special effects of the Matrix made the movie so popular when it came out. I said la gente no ha visto, but I should have said na habia visto because I was trying to say that “People had not seen special effects like that before”. I was so focused on trying to describe the scene I lost track of the proper grammar that I did know.

VOCABULARY - Kaia asked me “que es la trama” de Batman? I was not sure what the word “trama” was so I had to ask her to explain. I still had trouble because I just don’t know a lot of movie related vocabulary. This lack of vocabulary coincided with a TEXT TYPE breakdown as a result.

TEXT TYPE - Did NOT Meet Expectation - I was asked to explain the plot or a significant part of the Batman character series, but I really didn’t know where to begin with trying to describe a movie plot in Spanish. There are a lot of specific terms that I am unfamiliar with in cinema vocabulary because this is not a topic I commonly talk about in Spanish.

Profe Juanita, ayúdame por favor. The ways I can most benefit from your teaching are related to what you did in class on Monday when I used "realizar" instead of darse cuenta de. Things that I cannot easily look up when I get stuck trying to say something. Perhaps if you know many common compound phrases like that you could provide me a list so I can study them.
