Chateo 5

Other general feedback from conversation with Elian. We talked about the dishes I made for my viva la cultura (Chile Colorado and Mexican Rice). He confirmed this is a typical Mexican dish, but they might add beans to the rice.

Profe Juanita Ayudame - At this point the help I need kind of aligns with my goals for the Chateo. I am not really getting a lot out of speaking with other students who are trying to learn as well. I try to correct or assist my partners when there is something they don't know, that I do know, but this also risks people incorrectly correcting each other and developing bad habits. I need more time speaking with people who are more fluent in the language and can correct me in real time.

GOALS - I feel I am reaching the limit of what I can improve upon by speaking with other students at or below my current level. I need to spend more time speaking with people who have a better understanding and can correct me in real time when I make mistakes. If I have to look things up it makes it more difficult to memorize the vocab and grammar skills that I don't have.

GRAMMAR - I didn't know how to say "I thought she liked me". I never think about the "Me gusta" phrase much outside of saying what I like or what someone else likes in general. I'm pretty sure I got this part wrong.

VOCABULARY - I really struggle with saying things like "each other", myself, yourself, themselves. I always break down and can't really figure out a way to say things differently.

VOCABULARY - The entire part where I tried to describe the music I listen to from the 1960s was difficult because I don't have broad music related vocabulary. For the most part I think I was able to describe the time and music sufficiently for my partner to understand, but it felt clunky and laborious.

GRAMMAR - I said "Pienso que no hay ningun evento..." Is this a scenario where I should have used the subjunctive because I was speaking about something that definitely does not exist? It was not something that I even thought about while speaking, and probably didn't distract my partner from understanding, so I was able to continue on.

TEXT TYPE - In general I fell quite short of meeting my text type while discussing the questions about art and love. It is not a topic I speak a lot about in English, and in many cases have no desire or need to talk about, so it is difficult for me to think of the words in English, then translate to Spanish; especially in real time. I had to look up some words and I stumbled quite a bit. I'm not sure how I can develop the skills to improve my speaking about subjects that I have little interest in. I am open to suggestions.

TEXT TYPE - When discussing studying in different countries I felt it was some of the best back and forth conversation I have had with my partner in any of our Chateos. She understood what I was saying and was able to describe things she wanted to do as well. It felt very natural, which has been uncommon in the Chateos.

GRAMMAR - I said estaba mirando... to say "I was looking at" various countries. I didn't define a specific time period other than some indeterminant period in the past. I paused briefly because I wasn't sure if that was the correct use of the imperfect. Not sure if I should have used the preterite instead.

VOCABULARY - I have a tough time remembering to say el uncio/la unica when I was to say "The only time....". I always use the word solo/solamente. I really need to train myself to get better at that. It doesn't usually affect other inexperienced students from understanding me, and I can continue speaking without losing my stride.
