Kozue played our Good Company fundraiser party back in September 2024 and played such a fantastic set that we were keen to get her on the mix series and keep the party going.
Kozue is a Canadian based DJ who was born and raised in Japan. Her DJ style specializing in house, deep house, techno, and disco brings a positive and memorable experience to her audience through an expansive journey that touches across her unique selections of organic, electronic and eclectic sounds. Kozue has been an integral part of music events and festivals in Vancouver and BC, such as Bass Coast Festival, Public Disco, Vancouver Mural Festival, Bastid's BBQ, and more. She performs at various venues and events, captivating audiences with her eclectic and unique music selection and groovy mixing.
During the early 2000s, she found a distinct interest in music and DJing, which led her to start her music journey with a pair of turntables and records as a self-taught DJ. While playing in clubs and bars across Tokyo, Kozue also worked as an editor for a Tokyo-based music magazine, where she interviewed a diverse range of legendary producers and top DJs from around the world, such as DJ Harvey, David Morales, Adrian Sherwood, Andrew Weatherall, Flying Lotus, Orbital, Laurent Garnier, Joe Claussell, and more. The experience of hearing their stories and philosophies inspired her to further pursue a DJ career with a global, open-minded perspective.
During the mid 2010’s, Kozue moved to Toronto which provided proximity to major electronic markets like New York, Montreal, and Berlin; allowing her to experience those cities distinct sounds and dance culture. Toronto also gave Kozue the opportunity to play at local club events and radio shows where she further refined her sound.
Fast forward to 2019 and we find Kozue living and thriving in Vancouver’s local music scene; first starting her residency vinyl only sets at Bar Diamond and embarking on a new chapter of her musical journey by launching the Audio-Visual DJ Showcase “Resound’’ with visual artist toi whakairo on Bside Radio. (We love Bside!).
“What I love most about DJing is the connection I feel with everyone on the dance floor. It’s about syncing with the dancers’ energy and creating a story together. The musical journey is always full of surprises, twists, and turns, making it exciting and unpredictable. I put this mix together with the image of my favourite dance floor buzzing with that pure, vibrant energy.” - Kozue
I always appreciate when a DJ shows me new and exciting producers in their JKG mix and Kozue has not disappointed in that regard. This groovy mix keeps you going out West where the snowcapped mountains and crisp winter air gives you that pure vibrant energy that Kozue is known and celebrated for.
Enjoy the mix
