Iwan a.k.a. IWANMUSIQ was born and raised in a musical soul/rhythm blues/gospel-minded Christian Suriname household in the Netherlands, where his mother sang in the gospel choir of the church and his father played the bass guitar. Together with his younger sister, Sharon, they learned at a very young age how to sing. They also performed within the gospel choir of the church and they were also active in the church youth choir. Around the age of 16, Iwan began a small R&B/Soul boy group consisting of three guys ( lead vocal: Ivanildo, second lead vocal: Iwan, background vocals Jerome and Wincell ). The name of the group was “Once and Forever" but that didn't lasted long because he had to make a choice between a music career or an education in Electrical Engineering. Although his heart desires more to be in the music industry, he chose the other one because at those times, it offered him a much better opportunity to pursue a well-paid career after his study. It was a period in the Netherlands which was very difficult to break through in the R&B music industry as well as in soul. He even wrote a song or two for the group. As he turned 17, he and Sharon attended singing lessons to improve and develop more of their vocals. During this period, they got the opportunity to perform a cover of Laurin Hill feat. D’angelo “Nothing Even Matters" at the big Art and Culture Centre Pier K in Hoofddorp. They received a heartwarming standing ovation from the crowd. Their outstanding performance was published in the regional newspaper. At the age of 18, he and his sister were asked by Abby Drenthe to join her gospel/music entertainment group wherein he was reunited with his former group member Invanildo. They did a couple of gig’s in gospel and soul/funk music. It was a marvellous experience and it was good while it lasted. As his passion for music became stronger, at the age of 24, he broadened his knowledge furthermore by listening to various styles of soul, jazz and R&B. Modern jazz, neo soul, underground hiphop, R&B gospel, to mention a few. He also became interested in different electronic digital music such as broken-beat, drum&bass, garage, 2-step, deep-house, acid jazz, electronic soul, experimental, techno and minimal house music. Throughout the years, his love for music didn't stopped that he started forming his own style. At 30, he bought his own studio hardware and software, experimenting and learning to blend different style’s of music together. Nowadays, he is producing his own sound, each track bearing his own signature, which he calls, the "IWANMUSIQ flavor." His own style of music that he spices up with semi-underground, soul/jazzy/funky, groovy, bouncy tunes and beats. His sound is very unique, making his own tracks from scratch, using most of the sounds from his environment, turning them into real sounds or instruments.
