MEDA101 Ewan Bebbington - Smother by Ewan_Bebbington
published on
My piece titled, 'Smother', explores the idea of the rejection of one's own name; refusing to acknowledge it as a reflection of who they are or who they will become. My given name, Ewan, means ‘Son of the yew’, my middle name, Francis, means freedom and my family name, Bebbington, means protector. I recognised the hypocrisy in this, that protection is something that often diminishes freedom. I chose the sounds of a forest filled with life to represent the concept of freedom and the sounds of mechanisation and modernity to represent ‘protection’. I aimed to use these sounds as a representation of one’s inner conflict with identity; who they really are and not just what titled was forced upon them at birth. A name does not make the person, the person makes the name.
