Beeston Operatic Society was formed in 1967 which made 2012 our 45th Anniversary year - Sapphire apparently! The society was founded by Graham Anderson, John Hackney, Paul Middleton and Ted Morris who were all members of "other" societies but thought that Beeston should have its own operatic society for the people of Beeston who were supporting the neighbouring groups. An inaugural meeting was called to assess interest and 90 people attended! Michael Wright, a local councillor and business man, had experience in amateur operatics and was invited to become Producer; Andrew Nicklin was invited to become Musical Director - both accepted. The decision was made to form 'Beeston Operatic Society' and the first show produced was "White Horse Inn" which was performed at Round Hill School. BOS grew in number and popularity and eventually the move was made to a real theatre - the Co-Op Arts Theatre on George Street in Nottingham for performances; Round Hill School remained, and still remains, the rehearsal venue. Every show was performed at George Street until 2000 when the future of the theatre was in doubt and so we moved to The Duchess Theatre in Long Eaton. Sadly, our stay there was short as the theatre burnt down two weeks after our production of "Kismet". We came back to Round Hill School and performed our shows there from 2004 - 2010, joyfully returning to The Duchess for "My Fair Lady" and "The Full Monty" in 2011. Another major change came when we renamed the society in 2003. Having never produced and 'opera', it was decided to update our name to give a more realistic idea of what we actually did! BOS became BMTG - Beeston Musical Theatre Group. Our first production as BMTG was "Kismet"! Recent productions have shown us performing more modern musicals - "Jesus Christ Superstar" in 2006, "Little Shop of Horrors" in 2010, "The Full Monty" in 2011 and in 2012..."RENT" We hope BMTG will continue to produce and perform for the people of Beeston and Nottingham for many more years.
