BIOGRAPHY Synopsis Born March 03rd 1988, growing up in Zwelethemba, Worcester Western Cape, South Africa, SATMA NOMENEE IN THE YEAR 2013, ~Best Reggae Song Category, with (Ndinje) BLAK KALAMAWI THE SON OF KING SELASSIE. Early Life At 5years old he joined the junior school church choir. At the age of 10, he sang in the intermediate choir as a lead vocalist in the Gospel Group (worshipers of god) which was managed by his aunt. From age 11 Kalamawi could now play the keyboard and was also now a lead singer in the Group. At 15 Kalamawi was writing hooks for hip hop songs and started a Hip Hop group called JAHGEMENT YARD, with Bongani belu aka ROYAL. It consisted of 7 members. Naturally the style of Reggae and Hip Hop flowed out of the members. Kalamawi was the specialist hook writer for his crew (group). Career Blak Kalamawi started out his Solo career in Cape Town towards the end of 2007 with Songs like (black woman) the solo version of the song making him a name the next year in 2008. The Rasta then met (producer/owner) Ayanda Tywaku of PURPLE BEATS RECORDS, based in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. In Early 2010 his mix tape ZWELETHEMBA was released by Purple Beats records, it helped him progress very well into the music industry. 2010 saw the soccer world cup being staged in South Africa and Kalamawi was booked to be part of the singers along with a Brazilian band and other local stars around Worcester to take part in the world cup performances. Blak Kalamawi started doing radio interviews on local radio stations and met Radio DOC, from BUSH RADIO based in Cape Town, who linked him with TYRON HERMAN a promoter and sound system owner in Cape Town. Blak Kalamawi has opened for Jamaican Artist – Turbulence and gave an outstanding performance that blew South African audiences away. The performance raised his bar and earned him recognition from the Reggae community. This is the same year he recorded his “BIG TUNE”- titled “Ndinje” meaning the way I am and also the Hit She's in love with the Rastaman. Both tunes where recorded at BOOM ROCK RECORDS, by SOV. “Ndinje” was a Hit song that impressed promoters, radio Dj's, and reggae followers around the country. In the Middle of 2011, Blak Kalamawi shared the stage with two living legends Tony Rebel and Queen Ifrica. 2012 saw– Blak Kalamawi being the only Cape Town artist sharing the stage with ANTHONY B Live in Johannesburg, He gave another outstanding performance. In 2012 he was awarded best upcoming reggae/dancehall singer in the Cape Town Reggae Awards, then later in 2012 he opened for CAPLETON Live in Cape Town. Blak Kalamawi is now working on another single titled AMAXESH' ONKE meaning (all times) recorded at his own production Buv Hood Records – Unlocking the ghetto sounds, currently working with upcoming artist around his community Zwelethemba location.2013 he performed at the Reggae/Dancehall Winter Warmer event by Lioness Productions SA. Kalamawi is still going strong, this time releasing his debut Ndinje EP in October 2013 featuring songs like mna nawe, money me want and Jah never fail I yet.
