For antiphonal chamber woodwinds, piano, and vibraphone.
Best enjoyed in stereo.
I wrote Summer Shade in the winter of 2014. At the time the cold West Texas weather was wearing me down and I just wanted to feel the warmth of a summer sun. The piece is meant to conjure a hazy dream of summer - warm nights, cruises, shady palm trees. The vibraphone cues the entrance and exit of the dream sequence - the beginning and end of the piece - while the woodwind hockets and flourishes convey the fleeting memories of better, warmer days. The slower B Section with the piano cadenza denotes the remembrance and admittance that it's all a day dream; the transition back to a cold, windy reality.
Synthesized in Musescore.
