Closer Than Close is about taking the risk to know somebody. It’s about that tipping point in a relationship after getting know somebody where you ask whether you want to invest your time and energy into making your bond something greater. As an artist, a friend, a lover, and a human, the bonds I’m creating with people are sacred to me, and something that precious doesn’t happen overnight. We’ve all got insecurities, worries, fears, skeletons in the closet that we hope to move forward through in an effort to make our mark on the world, but if I’m sharing that with you, it’s special, and you’re special to me. And if you’re special to me now, I want you to be special to me forever. As I sing in the hook, “I only ever want it with you.” The song essentially asks the question: Are we gonna be close, or are we gonna be closer than close? I wrote and produced this song in Atlanta in a creative frenzy, my approach shifted by new energy. It’s got everything I like from the best of N.E.R.D and Daniel Caesar, plus older inspirations like the Pixies and Queen sprinkled in too. Really excited for everybody to hear this new sound I’m cooking up.
