25mm Bombard

The final project I had in mind to complete on last weekend's Paint and Chat was this bombard and crew from Black Tree Design. It was given to me but a fellow gamer at the Club two months ago. It fits in with my Scots for SAGA and that is where it shall be stored.

Objective Markers - The Barons' War

Last Sunday afternoon during my Paint and Chat, another project I wanted to complete was this set of Objective Markers from Footsore Miniatures and Games. They are also useful as objectives when playing SAGA.

Gaelic Forces Arrived

The last eight days have been non-productive as far as gaming has been concerned. The only thing that was accomplished was the addition to a Gaelic force that I saw for sale on Facebook Marketplace. Last year when I was out east (Halifax)) I ordered a copy of the  Infamy Infamy rules from Too Fat Lardies.

When I saw these figures on Facebook marketplace I immediately thought they would be a perfect match against my Romans for Infamy Infamy as well as a solid start for an Art de la Guerre Gaelic army. The Montreal club is planning a Too Fat Lardies day in January and I now hope to make a contribution with an  Infamy Infamy game.

All photos taken by the seller.

The total was 88 figures based as12 elements of six various Gaelic warriors on 60mm bases, and another 16 slingers based as 4 figures per 60mm circular skirmish elements. I believe the seller told me the figures were by 1st Corps. The only thing I contributed to this army was the addition of Magnetic base bottoms from Litko Game Accessories.

25mm Roman Marines

This was a second unit from the army of Jef Lauzon. My guess that the source of these figures was originally Minifigs. They have been rebased for any number of skirmish style gaming, such as SAGA, Clash of Spears or Dragon Rampant. In their previous life they were ready for action in any number of WRG/DBX formats. The figures soaked for a week in water to facilitate the debasing process. After a week, they just lifted off their previous base. I did a touch up on the shield as the white trim was flacking off.

Balearic Slingers - 25mm

As part of my Numidian Warband I was thinking I could repurpose some almost 50 year old (1977) Ral Partha slingers. These were troops of the Roman Army that was gifted to me by the widow of Jef Lauzon.  Jef was a long time Montreal gamer who ended up in Halifax in the last 1970s.  He unfortunately passed away in 2004 far too young. Age has not been kind to these figures. They can use a bit of freshing up but for the moment I am happy with just rebasing them.

Leprechaun - 25mm

Today was my final day at physiotherapy following my knee replacement surgery earlier this summer. As well as meeting physical goals we also discussed life, family, hobbies, etc. My physiotherapist expressed some interest in my painting of figures so today as a thank you I brought along a figure I had painted a few years ago. I said I hoped that it would follow the legend and now that she held a leprechaun  that it would grant her wealth.

I have no idea of when or where I had obtained this figure, nor of the company which produced it.

Ral Partha 01-080 Lizard and Rider?

This is a small rebasing project that has been sitting on the back burner for a couple of years. I picked these 16 figures up fairly inexpensively at the CanGames Marketplace pre-pandemic. They were based on what seemed to me be odd size bases (25mm x 75mm) and were obviously being used for a gaming system in which I did not indulge. Once debased they were clearly identified as a Ral Partha (c) 1977 product. The best match I could find online for them was Ral Partha 01-080  Lizard and Rider.

I have rebased them to the standard DBX game systems with a frontage of 60mm. Due to the depth of the figures I have mounted them on an 80mm deep base. Sixty wasn't going to be enough. The previous bases were mixes of carboard  and plastic. I have replaced all with MDF bases with a magnetic bottom. Other than being cool looking figures I am not quite sure where they fit into my gaming needs. Perhaps in a Daredevils Lost World setting, or somewhere in a Space 1889 context on Venus.

Saracen DBA/HOTT Part IX: Arabian Myth Flying Carpet

While searching my pile of lead, for something, which now escapes me, I found a Flying Carpet. I think it was a Black Tree Design purchase to serve as an additional element for my Saracen HOTT army. However it was a perfect item upon which to test my idea for the overall look of the some new desert elements. As well as establishing a new look I also test drove the Army Painter Speedpaints Starter pack.

I first hammered a clear plastic push pin through the centre of a LITKO 3mm thick plywood base. I then clipped the point off the tack as close to the wood as I could. This provided a solid element to work with. A 25mm metal washer was superglued to the flat head of the pin. Finally green stuff was used to adhere the figure to the washer.

I had a previous Flying Carpet as part of the army but I was not content with its base. I had used a clear Warhammer Flying stand and it didn't withstand the treatment I dished out. The figure broke off  a couple of times. I am sure that the photo below was the third time it was rebased. Today's addition appears to be much more robust than my previous effort.

PS. I am unable to locate the figure on the current Black Tree Design online catalogue.

Halloween - Reaper Madness

While out east on vacation I received some miniatures from a fellow gamer, when I dropped in for a day of gaming. Among the figures were two identical ogres by Reaper Miniatures.

Les said he had received them as some kind of promotional with an order he had placed.  Checking online,  I easily found the figures. They are Garghuk Ogre Chieftain from their Bones Black Line. In honour of Halloween I offer these two gentlefolk, as the special of the day. I refer to them as Tweedledum and Tweedledee

WIP - Roman Carroballista - Part II

Last year I posted about the Roman Carroballista that I had cobbled together using Warlord Games - Hail Caesar ox carts and some rather old Ral Partha or RAFM scorpion bolt throwers that were buried in my pile of lead. I lamented that I lacked crewmen for these war machines. Last month I had reason to place an order with Essex Miniatures and discovered on their website that they listed EXR23 Artillerymen in Segmenta Armour & Helmets. Exactly what I was looking for. Service was fantastic, with delivery from the UK to Montreal in only 8 days. I ordered three packs along with my other needed supplies.

New Lease on Life - Part IV The End

The final six stands are finished. I have added what pike that I could. These figures are what I believed to be original Hinchiffe Models from the early 1970s. I am sure there were 25mm figures of the day, but IMO are 20mm. I hope that converting them to L'Art de la Guerre rules will allow them to once again see the light of day.

New Lease on Life - Part III

Being of an age where it is not uncommon to be up at 3:00 AM for a call on nature, this morning I used the time to finish another block of pike. Flocking and tuffs were added last night before dinner. Since I was awake anyway, might just as well use 30 minutes to advance a project with the addition of the pike. Six more stands to go. Back to bed.

New Lease on Life - Part II

Work continues on this project. The generals and four phalanx stands are complete. Pike added and basing and flocking complete. Ten more stands to go.

Yesterday while waiting for the glue to harden I opened a box of  Victrix Dark Age figures I acquired locally. Bonus!! At the bottom lay 10 metal cavalry  figures, although with just five mounts. Years ago I purchased 36 plastic generic horses from Wargames Factory (now part of Warlord Games) for such occasions and still had about a dozen prepped for use.

It also included an additional 5 metal foot figures, who stand upon the box in which they came.

Most of the work on these figures yesterday was drilling through the hands so I could add their spears. Since they lacked weapons I trimmed some of the extra plastic spare parts that came with the Victrix purchase. I have a pill bottle filled with bits and pieces that were strewn about the bottom of the box.

The really great thing about this Dark Age purchase was the figures were pre assembled and already mounted. They also came a pile of Little Big Man transfers so I am really happy with this score.

Roman Army - More Busy Work

While working on the Greeks, I pulled a few of my Romans that I felt could do with a refresh of their bases. IMO they looked pretty hideous before hand.

As well a gift arrived in the mail to join my Greeks. Beware of gifts bearing Greeks.

New Lease on Life

These figures were part of a collection gifted to me by the widow of Jef Lauzon, who passed away in 2004. He was a master of the WRG 6th edition ancients rules and when I received them they were individually mounted. Fourteen elements of pike mounted for ADLG rules.  These were the armed might of his Successor Armies.

I spent the last few evening rebasing the figures. I need to do some sprucing up of the figures and of the bases upon which they are attached.

Nine bases of 50 year old plus pikemen (Minifigs or Hinchiffe Models I am not certain which)  and another 5 consisting of 1977 Ral Partha figures.

I even had sufficient loose figures to create some command figures on foot. Now to attach 120 plus pike.

What do you know. I found a couple of hundred fresh pike stored away in a parts box. First 24 pike are attached. They look far better armed.

Lightning Strikes - Roman Carroballista

Christmas 2000, Joseph my good friend and gaming buddy, and I met for our annual Roman Civil War. We were playing WRG 7th edition rules. Suddenly I found myself on the receiving end of massed fire of a unit of carroballista. Joseph and his wife, had spent the evening before my arrival, converting some Airfix Ancient Britain chariots, mated with Airfix Roman scorpio bolt throwers. It was a nasty surprise and the speed of the unit on the battlefield was inspiring.

Three of Joseph's carroballista run circles around his Legion

Warlord Games used to offer a scorpion mounted on a mule cart. From the time I first saw the image until recently it was always out of stock. This afternoon I couldn't even find it listed on their site. Meanwhile I squandered my hard earned sestertius on other frivolous figures and projects.

While combing my mountain of lead, I uncovered some ancient (30+ year old) Ral Parta/RAFM scorpions. The Early Imperial Roman Cart is nearly always available  for purchase. So I ordered three. This project has been sitting on my painting table for the last 6 months and I finally found time to complete it,

Image of a carroballista on Trajan's Column

I am now seeking some 25mm artillery crewmen. I have some Foundry figures, but the 28mm heroic scale of the crewmen seem rather out of scale to the bolt throwers themselves. However when compared to the carvings on Trajan's Column, maybe I shouldn't worry. If I am unable to find what I am searching for, I will paint the figures up.

The Hoard of the Thing

Since picking up this dragon last May at Cangames, I've been perplexed on how to display it as a Hordes of the Things element. Due to the length of the figure I decided upon a 60 mm x 120 mm base. Believe me the base is 60 mm wide. I wanted to show the dragon, Smaug-like slithering across it's hoard of gold and gems.

Dragon Defending It's Hoard

I picked up a package of 6 different tubes of glitter from the local Bureau en Gros (Staples outside Quebec) and prepared a mix of predominately gold glitter with some red, green and blue mixed in as gems. The photo doesn't do justice to the effect.

Oriental Blades (2 Packs)

Earlier this past summer, Le Valet d'Coeur a local game store in Montreal had its annual garage sale. I took the opportunity to pick up two boxes of Oriental Blades by eM-4 Miniatures

The figures come pre-painted and include a matching 20-sided die for mini. For five bucks, how could I go wrong. I figured I can always use the figures for Bushito by FGU or some other Japanese skirmish game. The only work I did was to do the bases of the figures. A relatively painless job. I added a metal washer to the bottom of each base for weight and to allow them to be stored on a magnetic sheet.

Men In Black: Japanese Ninjas

Long before Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones took to the screen, there was rumoured to be a secret organization that dressed in black and utilized special gadgets. The ninjas were covert agents or mercenaries in feudal Japan. Their functions included espionage, sabotage, infiltration, and assassination, and they used specialized equipment to complete these tasks.

According to Wikipedia, "By the time of the Meiji Restoration (1868), the tradition of the shinobi had become a topic of popular imagination and mystery in Japan. Ninja figured prominently in folklore and legend, and as a result it is often difficult to separate historical fact from myth. Some legendary abilities purported to be in the province of ninja training include invisibility, walking on water, and control over the natural elements. As a consequence, their perception in western popular culture in the 21th century is often based more on such legend and folklore than on the historical spies of the Sengoku (15th-17th Century) period."

I have completed 3 small "hit teams" that can be used in either the Bushito or Daredevil Adventures RPGs by Fantasy Games Unlimited. These were two of my favorite RPG Games. I ran a Daredevil's campaign and my good buddy Harris, ran the Bushito Game for our happy band of tabletop warriors.
