Pacing is off, half of the power-ups are useless because you’ll get an upgrade half an hour later, the game is very short, EMMI start out scary but turn tedious very quickly, writing is poor and minor story beats are nonsensical, ADAM (your AI) keeps telling you stuff that the game already told you a couple minutes before, exploration is disappointing since the game tends to close off all routes except the one correct one, power-ups are unsurprising and one of the later ones completely trivialises all combat except for bosses, boss fights consist of running, shooting missiles and QTEs and are very trial-and-error, controls are uncomfortable and complicated, music is forgettable … I do not like this game at all. Some positive points: EMMI are very scary in the beginning, it runs on 60FPS (I think) and tends to do so quite consistently, the death screen is very cool and reloading after death is quite quick, the game reminded me how absolutely amazing Hollow Knight and Metroid Prime are (which you can get for a lot less than €55,-).

I keep flipflopping between Recommended and Meh ... I’ve finished the game once and am currently in my second playthrough. However I’ve also played the first Last of Us, Resident Evil 2 Remake and Half Life: Alyx, and this game doesn’t do anything new or too special compared to those. I’m considering ending my second playthrough prematurely and spending some more time with the other games, because I’m not really enjoying it. Adding to this, I have one major problem with Part 2: the first game had one of the best, most interesting endings and didn’t need a follow-up. Part 2 doesn’t take away anything from the first game’s ending, but also feels very unnecessary. I do very much like the astounding amount of menu and accessibility options, some quality of life stuff, and a couple of the characters (though I don’t care about a lot of the others).

Some minor spoilers for classes, character names and game length. If you like (modern) Fire Emblems, you'll probably like Engage as well. I think it's also heavily inspired by Fire Emblem Heroes, both with regards to gameplay and to character design, but I'm not too sure because I haven't played Heroes yet. I had a good time, but I think the game is too long for how little it innovates gameplay along the way (130 hours for a semi-completionist playthrough) and there are too few side missions. The story is boring and might as well not have been there (I got some Power Rangers vibes, oddly enough), but Fire Emblem's stories are never the main draw (for me at least). What I do take issue with is the immensely bland cast of characters: I was somewhat attached to some, like Lapis, Chloé and Rosado, but I didn't care for the rest at all. They have no challenges to overcome, there is no conflict between them to be resolved and their personalities can be described with the word for the thing that they like ("this character likes working out", "this character likes tea", that's it). Character and class design is hit or miss. Most regular classes look pretty cool, but some others look very edgy or look like clowns/jesters and are really off-putting. Most characters look quite cool or cute as well, but the girls and women are unnecessarily sexualized: huge breasts, low-cut shirts, boob windows, bare stomachs and thighs, round butts, bra armour, short skirts, etc. And to be clear, women being sexual or sexy is not an issue, but their sexualization in videogames is, especially when they clearly are very young. Like I said, I had a good time playing Fire Emblem Engage, but I obviously have some issues with it. If you can only buy one game every now and then, this would be a good choice, because you can put a lot of hours into it :)

Exceptional
Exceptional game, very very good. It looks pretty nice, though it’s not the best looking game, performance isn’t up to par with contemporary (probably bigger budget) games, some combat/stealth sequences can be a bit tedious and the later chapters go by very quickly, but I absolutely love this game. I feel so much for the characters, especially Amicia, the music is so incredibly good (the main theme in particular) and by the end the game had left me broken. Poor Amicia and Hugo had to endure so much … For me, the story finished perfectly and I wouldn’t need another sequel, but if Asobo does follow up with another game, I couldn’t be more excited to see more of these wonderful characters.

I genuinely don’t understand why a lot of people keep singing Baldur’s Gate 3’s praises and it surprises me that criticism of the game is so hard to find. I played on PS5 for about 15 hours and I did not have fun, because of a lot of frustrations with the controls (camera controls in particular), awkward menus, mechanics not getting explained and general UI issues. In addition, I don’t find the game enjoyable to look at; textures are bland, there is a lot of pop-in (textures and assets), audio is weirdly mixed with some voices having (presumably) unintended reverb/echo, areas are incredibly dark, so much so that I had to put brightness at max, which whited-out the entire screen (perhaps something wrong with HDR) and I just have to squint at the screen all the time to make out what’s happening. I also had a couple of bugs with menus not appearing and the game not responding correctly to my inputs, which actually led to me killing a companion instead of talking to them after which the game autosaved, preventing me from fixing it. I don’t care about the story/characters so far, which is okay, I can imagine appreciating it/them over time, but I just don’t want to play anymore. I wasted my weekend and 70,- euros. If you liked Divinity Original Sin 2, you’ll probably like Baldur’s Gate 3 more than I did.
