Description
A HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCE WITH STERILIZATION FEATURE
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a household appliance for sterilizing an inner compartment thereof and/or items placed in the inner compartment.
Background of the Invention
Household appliances, especially ovens, dishwashers, refrigerators, washing machines, etc. comprise an inner compartment for receiving various items used in daily life (such as food products, kitchen utensils, clothes). Said items are placed in the outer environment for a certain period of time in line with the need, which, when necessary, are placed in the inner compartment of the household appliances. However, when these items are in the outer environment, harmful microorganisms such as microbes, bacteria and viruses accumulate on the item. These harmful microorganisms may propagate on the item, which may then infect other items if said item is placed back into the inner compartment of the household appliance. In case users contact with these items, the harmful microorganisms may harm physical health of the user.
In the prior art, there are various applications for sterilizing the inner compartments of household appliances. One of the methods used in the prior art is to produce the inner compartment of the household appliance from a material containing a sterile preservative such as silver. However, since substances such as silver may adversely affect the health of users in the long term, such substances are not preferred in household appliances.
Another sterilization application used in the prior art is the use of ultraviolet light. According to such applications, at least one ultraviolet light source is used to send ultraviolet light to the inner compartment of the household appliance. However, using an ultraviolet light source especially in devices operating at high temperatures such as ovens can create safety problems. Moreover, sending ultraviolet rays directly to users can also negatively affect the health of users.

Description of the Invention
Harmful microorganisms such as microbes, bacteria and viruses can spread through various items contacted by the users during the day. In order for the mentioned microorganisms not to cause health problems, there is a need to sterilize the items that users are in constant contact with, especially food products and textile products. Therefore, the present invention provides a household appliance for sterilizing an inner compartment thereof and/or items placed in the inner compartment.
The household appliance (A) according to the present invention, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, comprises at least one body (1); at least one inner compartment (2) provided in the body (1); at least one door (3) providing access into the inner compartment (2); at least
one chamber (4) adapted to store at least one sterilization liquid (e.g. a sterilizing substance, preferably food compatible, such as a vinegar-water mixture) therein; at least one inlet opening (5) allowing sterilization liquid to be filled into the chamber (4); at least one cold vapour generation system for converting the sterilization liquid in the chamber (4) into the cold vapour (such as mist); and at least one outlet line (7), wherein at least one side of the outlet line (7) is connected with the inner compartment (2) and at least another side thereof is connected to the chamber (4).
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the cold vapour generation system comprises at least one vapour generator (10). Thanks to the steam generator (10), which is preferably in the form of an ultrasonic generator, the sterilization liquid in the chamber is made granular. Sending the sterilizing cold vapour obtained in this manner to the inner compartment (2) ensures the inner compartment (2) and/or the items placed in the inner compartment (2) to be sterilized.
In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the cold vapour generation system comprises at least one pump (11) for pressurizing the sterilization liquid provided in the chamber (4); at least one nozzle (12) located on the side of the outlet line (7) connected with the inner compartment (2), wherein the nozzle (12) allows the sterilization liquid to be separated into relatively small particles (preferably between 5-30 microns in size) due to the pressure difference between the sterilization liquid pressurized by the pump (11) and the pressure of the inner compartment (2). In this embodiment, the pump (11) and nozzle (12) provide generation of cold vapour through an ultra-low volume.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the chamber (4) is located on one side of the body (1) away from the door (3). Here, said inlet opening (5) is preferably located on one side of the body (1) above the door (3), in order to easily fill the chamber (4) with sterilization liquid. In this embodiment, the household appliance (A) comprises at least one inlet line (6) for transmitting the sterilization liquid taken from the inlet opening (5) to the chamber (4). Said household appliance (A) also comprises at least one valve (8) located on the inlet line (6). Said valve (8) ensures controlled transmission of the sterilization liquid from the inlet line (6) into the chamber (4). In an alternative embodiment, the inlet opening (5) is located directly in the chamber (4). Thus, the sterilization liquid can be filled directly into the chamber (4) by the user.
In another preferred embodiment of the invention, the household appliance (A) comprises at least one cover (not shown in the figures) located on the inlet opening (5). Thanks to the cover, undesired foreign substances are prevented from being sent to the chamber (4).
In another preferred embodiment of the invention, the household appliance (A) comprises at least one distribution element (9) located in the inner compartment (2) for distributing the cold vapour transmitted to the inner compartment (2). Thanks to the distribution element (9) preferably comprising at least one fan, the sterilization liquid in the form of cold vapour sent to the inner compartment (2) is distributed on all surfaces of the inner compartment (2) and on the items placed in the inner compartment (2). Thus, it is ensured that all desired surfaces are sterilized in a practical and reliable manner.
In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, a cooking device is used as the household appliance (A). In this exemplary embodiment, the inner compartment (2) corresponds to a cooking compartment of the cooking device. In this embodiment, e.g. when the user wants to sterilize the inner compartment (2) and/or a food product placed in the inner compartment after a cooking process, firstly, he/she sends a sterilization liquid to the chamber (4) via the inlet opening (5). In such a case, preferably, a vinegar-water mixture can be used as the sterilization liquid. Vinegar-water mixture can be used reliably for food products since it is both food compatible and sterilizing. After the sterilization liquid has been sent into the chamber (4), a sterilization function of the household appliance (A) is activated. When the sterilization function is activated, the cold vapour generation system converts the sterilization liquid in the chamber (4) into cold vapour. Due to the fact that the sterilization liquid is transmitted to the inner compartment (2) in the form of cold vapour via the outlet line (7), the inner compartment (2) and the items in the inner compartment (2) can be sterilized. The process of transferring the sterilization liquid in the chamber (4) to the inner chamber (2) by converting it into cold vapour can be carried out for a predefined time, or it can be carried out until the sterilization liquid in the chamber (4) runs out.
In the household appliance (A) according to the present invention, the sterilization liquid in the chamber (4) is converted into cold vapour and transferred to the inner compartment (2), thereby sterilizing the inner compartment (2) and/or the items provided in the inner
compartment. Since a sterilization liquid is used for the sterilization process in the form of cold vapour, for example, if a user opens the door (3) of the household appliance (A) and accesses the inner compartment (2), the user is prevented from being harmed. This ensures reliable operation of the household appliance (A).
