- the HUD device mounted on the helmet includes a projection unit that projects display light according to the information to be displayed, and a combiner that reflects the display light projected by the projection unit toward the eyes of the user who is the wearer of the helmet.
- Prepare The combiner is composed of a half mirror and is arranged at a position within the front view of the user within a window opening provided in the front portion of the helmet, and transmits light from the front of the user. Therefore, the user can visually recognize the virtual image (display image) by the display light in a state of being superimposed on the landscape through the combiner.
- An example of such a HUD device is disclosed in Patent Document 1.
- the projection unit that constitutes the HUD device includes, for example, a light emitter that emits display light and a housing that houses the light emitter. An opening that allows the display light to pass through is formed in the housing, and the opening is covered. Thus, it has a structure in which a translucent plate-shaped cover member is provided. It is desired that such a projection unit is built in the helmet in order to make the helmet equipped with the HUD device compact.
- the projection unit When the projection unit is built into the helmet, if the cover member is located on the outer surface of the helmet, the user can easily touch the cover member when handling the helmet, and the surface of the cover member easily gets dirty.
- the surface of the cover member becomes dirty, the display light projected from the projection unit is blocked by the dirt on the surface of the cover member, so that the display image displayed by the HUD device is blurred (blurred). Therefore, the visibility of the display image that can be visually recognized by the user via the combiner deteriorates.
- a translucent cover plate is provided so as to cover the opening of the housing.
- a colorless and transparent clear plate is preferably used in order to avoid dimming the display light projected from the projection unit as much as possible.
- such a cover plate In order to project the display light toward the combiner, such a cover plate is arranged with the surface emitting the display light facing the window opening side of the helmet. Therefore, external light entering the inside of the helmet through the window opening may enter the cover plate.
- the external light that has entered the cover plate is reflected on the surface thereof, or is once transmitted through the cover plate and then reflected inside the projection unit in the direction of passing through the cover plate again.
- the cover plate is colorless and transparent and the surface has a relatively high light reflectance and light transmittance, the reflected external light is efficiently emitted to the user's face with a small amount of dimming. Be illuminated.
- the external light that is highly efficiently projected to the user's face side is then emitted to the combiner and enters the eyes of the user wearing a helmet.
- the outside light is applied to the combiner, the outer surface and the inside of the projection unit are reflected in the combiner. Further, when the outside light enters the eyes of the user, the reflection of the outside light may look dazzling. In either case, the visibility of the display image displayed by the HUD device is impaired.
- a transparent shield capable of covering the window opening is rotatably attached within a predetermined angle range to the helmet main body having a window opening formed in the front part.
- a helmet shield is generally attachable/detachable to/from the helmet body, and depending on the brightness of the external environment while the motorcycle is running, it is possible to use shields with different light transmittance from the viewpoint of visibility. It can be replaced.
- Helmet shields include colorless and transparent shields, colored transparent shields such as smoke shields with a light-shielding smoke color, and mirror shields that look like a mirror-like appearance.
- a smoke shield is used in the daytime when the sunlight is strong, while a colorless and transparent shield is used in cloudy weather or at night.
- Smoke shield is generally called “soft smoke” or “dark smoke”, but there are various kinds of smoke with different darkness.
- mirror shields that have reflecting surfaces of many colors such as blue and red.
- the combiner is arranged inside the shield, but the brightness outside the helmet is not taken into consideration without considering the change of the light-dark state of the user's field of view due to the replacement of the shield having the different light transmittance. Since the brightness of the display image viewed through the combiner is adjusted according to the above, the visibility of the display image may be deteriorated by replacing the shield.
- the shield of a helmet when the shield of a helmet is replaced with a shield having a relatively high light transmittance such as a colorless and transparent shield by a shield having a relatively low light transmittance such as a smoke shield, the visibility of the user becomes dark, and thus the HUD device is darkened. If the brightness of the display image that can be visually recognized by the user is set to bright eyes when using a shield having a high light transmittance, the display image may appear dazzling and hinder driving. ..
- the shield of the helmet when the shield of the helmet is replaced with a shield having a relatively low light transmittance from a shield having a relatively high light transmittance, the field of view of the user becomes bright, so that the display image visible to the user by the HUD device is displayed. If the brightness is set to dark eyes in accordance with the shield having low light transmittance, the display image is obscured by external light and becomes difficult to see. In addition, the brightness of the display image displayed by the HUD device that is easily visible varies from user to user.

As a result, blurring (blurring) that occurs in the display image displayed by the HUD device can be reduced, and the visibility of the display image can be improved.
- the cover plate having a color capable of obtaining the dimming effect since the opening through which the display light of the projection unit passes is covered with the cover plate having a color capable of obtaining the dimming effect, the reflectance of external light on the surface of the cover plate is low due to the dimming effect of the cover plate. In addition, the transmittance of external light in the thickness direction of the cover plate is also reduced. As a result, even if the outside light that has entered the interior through the window opening of the helmet enters the cover plate, the outside light that enters the cover plate is reflected on its surface or the cover plate is moved in the thickness direction.
- the intensity of the external light reflected on the surface of the cover plate and the inside of the projection unit becomes weak, and it is possible to suppress the reflection on the outer surface of the projection unit and the internal projection target.
- the reflection of external light on the surface of the cover plate against the eyes of the user can also be reduced. Thereby, the visibility of the display image displayed by the HUD device can be improved.
- the color with which the cover plate has the dimming effect may be a smoke color.

- Other information useful for the user such as information about peripheral facilities in the traveling area, may be set as an item to be displayed on the HUD device 3.
- the full-face type helmet was described as an example of the helmet 101 on which the HUD device 3 is mounted, but the technology of the present disclosure is not limited to this.
- the full-face type helmet 101 is only an example of the helmet 101 on which the HUD device 3 is mounted, and any open face type (jet type) or semi-jet type may be used as long as it has a part that can accommodate a projection unit. It is possible to employ any type of helmet such as (three quarters type) as the helmet 101 on which the HUD device 3 is mounted.
- the helmet 101 equipped with the HUD device 3 has been described by taking the helmet 101 worn when driving a motorcycle as an example, but the technique of the present disclosure is not limited to this.
- the HUD device 3 can of course be applied to a motorcycle such as a water bike or a bicycle, or a helmet worn in other vehicles such as a snowmobile.
- the cover plate 65 is configured by attaching a smoke film 71, which is a semitransparent dark resin film, to the surface of a colorless and transparent base material 69.
- the base material 69 and the smoke film 71 are made of, for example, polycarbonate (PC) or methyl polymetallate (PMMA) resin, and the smoke film 71 is made of a dark-colored material.
- the cover plate 65 may be composed of a single resin plate 73 made of a dark colored material, as in the second modification shown in FIG. Since the cover plate 65 has the smoke color in this way, it is possible to obtain a dimming effect of lowering the light transmittance in the thickness direction as compared with the case of being colorless and transparent.
- the light transmittance in the thickness direction of the cover plate 65 is 5% or more and 50% or less.
- the light transmittance of the cover plate 65 is a value of total light transmittance measured according to JIS K 7361-1 (or JIS K 7375:2008), and is, for example, manufactured by Murakami Color Research Laboratory Co., Ltd. It is possible to measure using a measuring device (high-speed integrating sphere type spectral transmittance measuring device model: DOT-41).
- the light transmittance of the cover plate 65 is set in the above range because the user can display the display image displayed by the HUD device 3 when the light transmittance of the cover plate 65 in the thickness direction is less than 5%.
- the amount of power of the power source consumed by the light emitting device 57 is increased to make the brightness easily visible and the light transmittance of the cover plate 65 in the thickness direction exceeds 50%, the light is transmitted through the cover plate 65 once. This is because the light reflected in the direction of passing through the cover plate 65 again inside the projection unit 39 may be reflected in the combiner, and the visibility of the display image displayed by the HUD device 3 may be impaired.
- the technology of the present disclosure is useful for a HUD device mounted on a helmet and a helmet equipped with the HUD device.
