Abstract
The present invention relates to a television in which access to the service menu is made secure. In the television of the invention, a user cannot turn a service menu on even if he/she enters the button combination required to turn the service menu on, without having the external device required to turn the service menu on.
Description
The present invention relates to a television and in particular to a television with a service menu.
Nowadays, televisions can be found in every household and work place. Capabilities of televisions have been improving with the advances in technology. Televisions are operated by software referred to as embedded software which are stored in the memory of televisions. As capabilities desired to be possessed by televisions increase, such software has been becoming more complex. There are many parameters used by these software and only some of those parameters are desired to be modifiable by the users. The remaining parameters utilized by software are desired to be accessible only by service personnel. In fact, some parameters are desired to be accessible only at the plant in which the television is produced. Menus referred to as service menus are developed to that end which are accessible by entering a particular button combination via a controller. Under normal circumstances, these menus are concealed from users since they would not have the required combination information. However, in today's world where communication has become very fast and simple, these secret codes (combinations) can be easily found on the Internet. User using these codes may disrupt television settings and render a television inoperable. Therefore, it is needed to make access to a service menu more secure.
State of the art South Korean patent document no. KR20030075109 mentions an external device activating and controlling a service menu on a television.
None of the state of the art documents include a solution such as the one in the present invention.
The aim of the present invention is to realize a television with a service menu.
Another aim of the present invention is to realize a television in which access to a service menu is made secure.
A television in which access to the service menu is made secure, comprises in its most basic form,
- at least one communication unit enabling establishing connection with an external hardware,
- at least one memory suitable to store at least one of the data including the list of modifiable settings, the current values of these settings, the required button combination to turn the service menu on and at least one of the code data required to allow access to the service menu, and
- at least one control unit adapted to receive commands at least from a controller, to read the code data required to turn the service menu on if this command contains the button combination required to turn the service menu on, to access an external device by means of the communication unit, to access the data in the external device, and to display the service menu to the user on a screen if the external device contains a data corresponding to the code data required to turn the service menu on.
In its most basic form, a television in which access to the service menu is made secure, comprises at least one communication unit enabling establishing connection with an external hardware. Said communication unit may be a unit enabling establishing communication via any one of the communication standards including USB port, firewire port, RS-232 interface and LAN interface. For better understanding of the invention, the communication unit will be exemplified as a USB port, and the external device with which said communication unit establishes communication will be exemplified as a USB memory. The television of the invention is suitable to be used with at least one controller enabling a user to remotely execute a desired operation. In the state of the art, controllers usually have infrared transmitters. Naturally, the invention is independent of the communication interface used by the controller. The television of the invention comprises at least one memory suitable to store at least one of the data including the list of modifiable settings, the current values of these settings, the required button combination to turn the service menu on and at least one of the code data required to allow access to the service menu. The menu referred to as service menu herein is an entirety of settings not desired to be accessed by the users but desired to be accessed by service personnel. The control unit receives the entered buttons by means of a sensor. The control unit compares the button combination entered on the controller with the button combinations stored in the memory, required to turn the service menu on. If said combination is identical to the buttons entered on the controller, the control unit perceives that the service menu is desired to be turned on. In this case, the control unit reads from the memory the code data required to turn the service menu on. Then, the control unit attempts to access an external device by means of the communication unit. If the control unit fails to find an external device or finds the external device but fails to find therein a data corresponding to the code data required to turn the service menu on, it does not display the service menu to the user. If the control unit finds in the external device a data corresponding to the code data required to turn the service menu on, it displays the service menu to the user. Thus, normal users cannot turn the service menu on even if they know the button combinations required to turn the service menus on. The service menu can only be turned on if communication is established with an external device containing a relevant code. In other terms, a service personnel is able to turn the service menu on by using a USB memory containing a file enabling turning the service menu on.
In an embodiment of the invention, the memory may contain different service menus. In this embodiment, the memory may contain different codes to turn different service menus on. Thus, television settings are enabled to be turned on by service personnel with particular authorization levels. In other terms, the interferable settings on the television can be grouped as settings accessible by service personnel, regional service and factory.
The television of the invention is suitable to be used with an external device which can be communicated by means of the communication unit and containing a code required to access the service menu.
