Description
Lid for a dog water bowl
The present invention relates to lid for a dog water bowl.
Such a lid for mounting on a dog water bowl is marketed as a part of a set consisting of a stainless dog water bowl with a lid and sold under the trade mark Mitzo. This lid is made of stainless steel and is provided with a circular hole at the centre. It will have some effect in relation to reducing spray and drip, but it will still be wet around the dog's drinking spot. Furthermore, the lid can only be used for a bowl with a certain diameter.
The problem which the present invention aims to overcome is that some dogs spray water and saliva when they drink form a bowl. Apart from spilling of water this often leads to the dog's drinking spot turning wet and subsequently often slippery. Furthermore, there is a risk of moisture seeping into the floor, and there is also possibly a risk of dry food located close by turning damp and as a result will have a tendency to turn into a habitat for fungi and bacteria.
According to the present invention a lid of the type mentioned above is made of a flexible natural or synthetic material and is provided with one or more circular incisions formed in the lower side thereof, which are provided to enable removable mounting of the lid on a dog water bowl with a suitable diameter, and with a centrally located elongated hole for the tongue of the dog, and a depression that is formed around this hole to accommodate excess water that by means of gravity is guided back into the dog bowl.
When a dog is to drink it collects water by bending the tongue backwards and putting its tongue double. In principle, the lower side of the tongue acts
as a sling shot and lifts up the water. In this way the dog can lift up water through a slit, which is utilised in the present device.
By means of a lid for a dog bowl of the type mentioned above, a substantial reduction of spray of water and saliva is achieved. To a certain degree, the lid also ensures that foreign matter, such as food pellets, does not fall down into the water bowl.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention one or more partly through cuts of the lid are formed around the hole to enable enlargement of the size of the hole.
In this way it is possible to use one lid for dogs with different tongue sizes.
It is preferred that a lid for mounting on a dog water bowl has an outer diameter of between 120 and 300 mm, that the thickness of the lid is between 3 and 10 mm, and that the depth of the incisions varies between one third and two thirds of the thickness of the lid.
In this way, a lid that can be adapted to largely all relevant sizes of dog water bowls is provided. The depth of the incisions ensures a good retention on the edge of a bowl.
In the following, the invention will be described in further detail referring to the drawings, in which
Fig. 1 shows a top view of the lid, and
Fig. 2 shows a side view of the lid.
In Fig. 1 the numeral 1 designates a lid with a drip stop effect that is intended to be put on top of a dog water bowl (not shown). In this case the lid 1 is made of silicone rubber, but, of course, other flexible natural or synthetic food grade materials can be used. The outer part of the surface of the lid is flat. The concentric dotted lines 2a, 2b and 2c depict incisions that are formed in the lid 1 from below so that the lid 1 can fit different dog water bowls. In the centre of the lid 1 there is an elongated hole 3, through which the dog is to extend its tongue to drink. Around the hole 3 the dotted line 4 depicts a partly cut through area. The part of the lid 1 inside of the dotted line 4 can be removed, preferably without the use of tools, but, obviously, it can also be cut off with a knife or a pair of scissors. In this way the lid 1 becomes suited for a dog with a larger tongue. It is also possible to provide the lid with more partly cut through areas.
As it is most easily seen in Fig. 2, there is an area 5 around the hole 3 inclining towards the hole 3. This ensures that possible excess water that the dog pulls up through the hole runs back into the bowl. The partly cut through areas 2a, 2b, and 2c are also clearly visible in Fig. 2. Preferable, they extend halfway up into the material to ensure a good retention on the dog water bowl.
In the preferred embodiment, the outer diameter of the lid is 250 mm, and the incisions have a diameter of 220, 200, and 180 mm, respectively. The thickness of the material, which is food grade silicone rubber, is 6 mm, and the depth of the incisions is approximately 4 mm.
