Abstract

A two or one piece shadow line J-Trim for creating a modern shadow line effect used with PVC and polystyrene ceiling boards. When the interlocking two pieces or one piece trim is viewed from the side; perceived view is a J with an overlap. Both the trim's consisting of a long top leg (1602) of the J and more or less half the length of the top leg for the bottom leg (1607) of the J. The J top leg having an extension called an overlap creating the shadow line effect for the ceiling when placed against a wall. Said trim's is then connected to a ceiling board after being mounted to brandering like trusses, rafters and other roof structures first.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Technical Field

The present invention relates to a J-Trim employed for a ceiling isolation board or panel so as to cover an end portion of a ceiling isolation board.

2005 Description of the Prior Art

In this document "J-Trim with a shadow line" can be referred to as "the shadow line J-trim" or "J-Trim shadow line."

To avoid confusion it is important to note that a J-trim can also be referred to as a J- 2010 Channel (United States and North America) and a J-Bead (Australia) in different countries of the world, whereas J-Trims, J-Beads and J-Channels can also be used around windows or doors and vertical drywalls for a neat trim effect. In essence J- channels and J-beads are the same type of trimming component as a J-Trim. Other type of trims also exist like U-Trims and H-Trims (two entry points to connect two 2015 drywalls or plaster boards; for example)

Plaster and other heavier drywall products require aluminium or steel J-Trims, J- Channels or J-Beads. Shadow line ceilings are currently especially used on plaster or gypsum board to neaten and tidy the ceiling. It is a modern way of tidying and 2020 clean-up ceilings to ensure clean and neat lines where the ceiling connects with the wall.

There is usually a space between 1 0 mm and 25 mm left open to ensure a shadow line effect between the wall and the ceiling.

There are also prior art {Figure 1) steel made shadow line J-Trim's with insert space (101 ) between the base and the overlap (102) for fixing to a steel frame ceiling system for use as ceiling construction. In other words on the extended leg of the J the leg is folded back (103) to leave an insert (101 ) for fixing sliding space. This is 2030 specifically a steel or metal shadow line trim. It has to be fixed to a specific steel ceiling system grid.

More prior-art Shadow line Trim {Figure 2) is specifically designed for plaster boards (204), drywall and other products. Although not considered a J-Trim and just normal

2035 shadow line Trim, because the bottom lip is very short. This prior-art shadow line Trim has an extended leveller (201 ) on the overlap (202) to be of guidance to sidewalls (200) and not trusses or truss extensions like rafters etc. The long leg (203) of the prior art Trim is much-much longer than the lip (206) compared to the arm ratio of the invented Shadow line J-Trim. Short arm (206) is more considered a

2040 lip and rather a direction pointer and keeper for plaster board installation. Using this Trim one has to make use of specific plaster screws (205) to secure the plaster board. The plaster screws still need to get plastered over also or covered with paint etc. to make the ceiling neat. The lip (206) won't hold the plaster board or any other board in place or position like said invented trim. This is a very important aspect of 2045 the invention. According to this the invented Trim has a much longer leg on the

bottom end to make sure ceiling boards like polystyrene and PVC can be safely and securely installed and also be kept loose inside the invented J-Trim.

Furthermore prior art normal J-trim exist where in use there is no overlap (102) (202) (no shadow line). Only one long leg and one shorter leg usually half the long legs length exist.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

According to the invention new Polystyrene ceilings and new PVC ceilings can now be used with the Shadow line J-Trim as supposed to the prior-art gypsum or plaster

2060 board ceilings being used with specific prior art J-Trim Shadow lines.

According to the invention the polystyrene and PVC boards are light enough and the invented shadow line J-Trim strong enough to host the board loose permanently.

2065 Improved invention for PVC and Polystyrene board was required.

Firstly a Polystyrene ceiling with a J-Trim Shadow line is explained:

By introducing "A J-Trim with a shadow line" we want to improve the use of connecting this shadow line J-Trim to a thicker polystyrene ceiling board for the

2070 purpose of warm and cold weather isolation. Usually ceiling trims are not so thick or have in particular a narrow mouth with an opening mouth diameter of between 7 mm to say 12 mm.

The opening width of said trim will determine the width of the accompanying board.

In order for a shadow line J-Trim to connect to a polystyrene isolation ceiling board in accordance with the present invention the shadow line J-Trim opening will be 25 mm to 35 mm or thicker for practical purposes of effective isolation. Contrary to the common PVC ceiling there are no normal J-Trims available on the market for a much 2080 thicker polystyrene ceiling board even if they are prior art shadow line J-Trims.

It is duly very important to note that the thickness of the polystyrene board is to ensure proper sturdiness and proper isolation for practical reasons and reliability. Typical ceiling polystyrene board is rigid and in extruded compress foam form that 2085 resembles something like a honeycomb. A thinner polystyrene board will simply

crack, splinter and definitely brake too easy. Regarding thermal insulation or isolation a thinner polystyrene board would not prevent heat or cold retention. Yes al buildings loose heat or cold retention over time but at least a thicker board will have much better isolation properties.

The Shadow line J-Trim for specifically ceiling isolation board, double act as a ceiling and isolation board trim. Secondly a PVC ceiling with a J-Trim Shadow line is explained:

Both the PVC and the polystyrene boards are not easily squared off or tidied at the ends against a wall and that's why conventional cornices are used if the job requires neatness which is mostly the case.

2100 It is important to understand that PVC ceilings are great first degree isolators,

meaning that warmer environments or an air-conditioned condoned area that is thermostat controlled don't require thick polystyrene boards.

PVC boards of a mere thickness from 6 mm are just as strong and rigid as a

2105 polystyrene board of say 30 mm. These are also the most common widths for both products in the market.

Accordingly to both Polystyrene and PVC boards explained above:

2110 It is an object of the invention to improve ceiling isolation to contribute to a more modern decorative look by introducing the Shadow line J-Trim.

Accordingly it is a further object to the invention that this shadow line

J-Trim approach can at least add dimension to an isolation purposed ceiling by 2115 adding a shadow line. This is the popular modern version and alternative to cornice ceilings.

Accordingly it is an object of the invention that the opening width of the Shadow line J-Trim will determine to fit to the width of the accompanying board meaning that 2120 different prior extruded invented J-Trim shadow line sizes can be made whereby the most popular standard sizes are 6-12 mm for PVC and 25 - 35 mm for polystyrene board. However 40-50 mm and 80 mm extruded invented shadow line J-Trim are also sometimes used for selected polystyrene applications.

It is further an object of the invention to provide a J-Trim shadow line made with 2125 inexpensive plastic or PVC which can be substituted for expensive steel and

aluminium shadow line trims. The said J-trim is easier to mount with a screw by hand or by screwdriver. The PVC is hence soft of nature and lightweight.

Therefore it is further an object of the present invention to provide a J-Trim shadow line which is inexpensive because of its easy construction and is possible to use in 2130 several other board ceilings and sidings made of other materials.

It is yet another object of the invention to provide a shadow line J-Trim to easily mount the overlap or long leg of the said trim onto the brandering, lath, trusses or rafters by means of screws, nails, rivets etc.

Yet further another object of the invention of the Shadow line J-Trim is that when 2135 there's action or movement on a wall or roof there will be less after effects as

opposed to normal cornices where it can be seen more easily. Cornices would normally make hair's-breadth cracks after wall or ceiling movement. Another object of the invention is that the PVC and Polystyrene boards are left loose 2140 inside the invented trim to make sure the ceiling can withstand movement damage.

More so another object of using the Shadow line J-Trim saves time and money because you only need to install the ceiling without a cornice; its saves on Cornice maintenance.

2145 Finally: according to the above "Summary of the invention": it is a final object of the invention to present a two piece J-Trim Shadow line in order to make installation easier. Due to the longer bottom leg 304(Fig 3) of the invented J-Trim it can be much more difficult to get a ceiling board into the mouth/opening of this invented J-Trim Shadow line compared to prior art short leg 206 (Fig 2). The ceiling board would

2150 normally have to get tilted quite a bit to go into the invented trim. Thus the inventors propose a two piece extendable Shadow line J-Trim (Fig 16) where the bottom piece inserts into an opening between two legs extending down from the top piece. The ceiling board must firstly be placed against the top piece and then the bottom piece gets inserted into the top piece securing the ceiling board to the invented J-Trim

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS

In Figure 3 the overlap 301 and outside rear leg 305 together ensures a shadow 2215 effect 306 against a wall. The top leg 302 together with the bottom leg 304 and inside rear leg 303 form the opening 302 where the ceiling board is inserted.

In Figure 4 the ceiling board 404 will be inserted at the opening 403 of the invented one piece shadow line J-Trim 402. The invented shadow line J-Trim 402 is already

2220 positioned against the wall 401 . Second embodiment in Figure 4 reveals the ceiling board 405 inserted into the Shadow line J-Trim. The invented Shadow line J-Trim FIG 3 has a much longer bottom leg 304 than prior art FIG 2's bottom leg 206. This means it's more difficult to insert a ceiling board from an angle into the opening of 302 than a prior art FIG 2 trim. This difficulty of inserting a ceiling board can be

2225 overcome by an invented two piece Shadow line J-Trim 4022. Ceiling board 4044 is first placed against top piece 4022 and then bottom piece 4033 is clicked in to form a sealed unit 4055.

In Figure 5 is an embodiment of a shadow line 502 between the ceiling board 501 2230 and the wall 503. In Figure 12 a two piece 1202 & 1204 Shadow line Trim is invented. Bottom piece 1204 connects into top piece 1202 at the invented two leg split opening 1206 with buttons 1207 clicking in. ^*See side view Figure 13.

In another embodiment of Figure 12 above: in Figure 13 the bottom piece 1307 clicks into top piece 1302 where 1305 clicks together with 1304 and 1310 to form 1309 as a secured Trim.

2240 Figure 14 shows securing an inserted ceiling board 1408.

Figure 15 embodies an extension of a one click Shadow line J-Trim to a 2 and 3 click Shadow line J-Trim. Note the width of the Trims mouth can now be widened 1511 or narrowed 1512 to the width of the ceiling board 1508. This is now an invented 2245 extendable shadow line J-Trim.

In Figure 16 another type of extendable two piece 1602 & 1607 Shadow line J-Trim is invented. Bottom piece 1607 connects into top piece 1602 at the two leg split opening 1604 with as example but not limited teeth interlocking in the form of small 2250 square teeth 1603 or triangle shaped teeth 1601 to secure the Trim's two pieces 1602 & 1607. The Figure 16 J-Trim is an improvement on the Figure 15 J-Trim because the width of the chosen ceiling board can now be any reasonable width.

In Figure 17 an example of an extendable Shadow line J-Trim where the width size 2255 1709 & 1710 is embodied to show the invented J-trim can accommodate wider 1706 or narrower 1708 ceiling boards to any wished or preferred measure. The interlocking teeth can be separated by means of a human finger 1711 etc.

Claims

J-trim with a shadow-line CLAIMS What is claimed is:

1 . An extruded one piece shadow line J-trim for ceiling construction comprising: a top leg being the longest and forming the top part of the opening; a bottom leg forming the bottom end of the opening; a rear leg forming the end of the opening; and an overlap for shadow line decorative effect extending on the top leg piece.

2. The shadow line J-Trim of claim 1 wherein the top leg is parallel to the

bottom leg.

3. The shadow line J-Trim of claim 1 wherein the top leg is perpendicular to the bottom leg.

4. The shadow line J-Trim of claim 1 wherein the overlap is formed extending in a straight line from the top long I leg, past the rear leg.

5. The shadow line J-Trim of claim 1 wherein the overlap is also

perpendicular to the rear leg.

6. The shadow line J-Trim of claim 1 wherein the top leg, bottom leg and rear leg are integral.

7. The shadow line J-Trim of claim 1 whereby the said trim overlap is used as a shadow line decoration element.

8. The shadow line J-Trim of claim 1 whereby the bottom leg is a marginal improvement to the short length lip of prior art shadow line plaster board J- Trim's.

9. The shadow line J-Trim of claim 1 whereby the said trim can be used in a thinner or much thicker variant depending on the extruded predetermined size of the opening.

10. An interlocking extendable shadow line J-trim extruded in two separate pieces for ceiling construction comprising: a separate horizontal top leg being the longest and forming the top piece of the opening double vertical legs extending down forming the vertical rear end of the top piece opening; each of these double vertical legs have teeth in the inside; a separate bottom leg forming the bottom piece of the opening; a single rear bottom leg with an extending leg vertical up, forming the rear end of the bottom leg piece; this bottom leg piece with the vertical up leg is covered with teeth on both sides; and an overlap for shadow line decorative effect extending on the top leg piece.

14. The two piece shadow line J-Trim of claim 10 wherein the overlap is also perpendicular to the rear legs.

15. The two piece shadow line J-Trim of claim 10 wherein the top leg, bottom leg and rear legs are integral after interlocking.

16. The two piece shadow line J-Trim of claim 10 whereby the said trim

overlap is used as a shadow line decoration element.

17. The two piece shadow line J-Trim of claim 10 whereby the bottom leg is a marginal improvement in length to the short length lip of prior art shadow line plaster board J-Trim's.

18. The two piece shadow line J-Trim of claim 10 whereby the said trim's

opening can be manually extended to the desired width of a ceiling board.

19. A method of applying ceiling to brandering comprising:

Providing invented one piece shadow line J-Trim, comprising: a top leg being the longest and forming the top part of the opening; a bottom leg forming the bottom end of the opening; a rear leg forming the end of the opening; and an overlap for a shadow line decorative effect extending on the top leg piece.

Mounting the extruded shadow line J-Trim to the brandering, trusses, lath etc. against a wall so that the overlap creates a shadow line effect.

Positioning the ceiling board edge inside the extruded shadow line J-Trim opening.

20. The shadow line J-Trim in the method of claim 19 whereby the top leg must be used to mount the trim.

21 . The shadow line J-Trim in the method of claim 19 whereby the said trim can host a board or panel loosely.

22. The shadow line J-Trim in the method of claim 19 whereby the said trim acts as an isolation board shadow line trim.

23. The shadow line J-Trim in the method of claim 19 whereby the said trim acts as a ceiling board shadow line trim.

24. A method of applying ceiling to brandering comprising:

Providing invented two piece shadow line J-Trim, comprising: a separate horizontal top leg piece being the longest and forming the top part of the opening; a separate horizontal bottom leg piece forming the bottom end of the opening; an overlap for a shadow line decorative effect extending on the top leg piece.

Mounting the top separate shadow line J-Trim piece to the brandering, trusses, lath etc against a wall so that the overlap creates a shadow line effect.

Positioning the ceiling board edge against the shadow line J-Trim top piece; securing the ceiling board after inserting the bottom piece single leg between the two vertical top legs of the top piece; and interlocking and securing the ceiling board between the two pieces by means of the teeth.

25. The shadow line J-Trim in the method of claim 24 whereby the top leg separate piece must be firstly used to mount the trim.

26. The shadow line J-Trim in the method of claim 24 whereby the said trim can host a board or panel loosely after the bottom separate piece is inserted into the top piece and secured by the two pieces then interlocking with their teeth.

27. The shadow line J-Trim in the method of claim 24 whereby the said trim acts as an isolation board shadow line trim.

28. The shadow line J-Trim in the method of claim 24 whereby the said trim acts as a ceiling board shadow line trim.
