Description

SPEEDOMETER FOR TWO-WHEELED VEHICLE
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention is a smart human machine interface on speedometer of a two- wheeled connected to inform and help the rider to attend or reject calls as required.
BACKGROUND
There is a need felt among motorcyclists to be able to get intimations of incoming calls and text messages while riding a vehicle. A provision to disconnect calls or to automatically send a message informing the caller, that the user is driving the vehicle will also be beneficial.
DISCUSSION OF THE PRIOR ART
Published Patent JPH10313479 discloses a vehicle communication system which detects if the vehicle is in a traveling state while an incoming call is sensed and automatically responds to the call with a previously stored message. The system also stores a voice message delivered by the caller. The display of the caller details on the vehicle instrument cluster will be of much benefit. So, that the rider can stop the vehicle and attend the call if needed.
Indian Published Patent 331/CHE/2005 discloses a communication device for a two-wheeler wherein a mobile phone can be connected near the vehicle speedometer and connected with a charger. Whenever an incoming call is recognized by the rider, an ON/OFF switch can be operated to connect the call, and the rider can talk to the caller through a microphone and speaker in a helmet. The rider can thereafter disconnect the call using the ON/OFF switch. The difficulty involved is mounting the mobile phone near the front part of the vehicle, particularly in a two-wheeler that is exposed to harsh weather conditions.
CN 201238328 Y titled DA vehicle-mounted hands-free phone calls and an information display deviceW discloses an incoming call and information displaying apparatus of vehicle mounted hand free telephone wherein a Bluetooth communication module is available in the vehicle to pair with the userDs phone and transfer incoming call details onto a display device above the vehicle instrument cluster. A projection device is also present in the vehicle to project the caller details on to a windshield of the vehicle. But the additional display device and projection device will increase cost and complexity of the vehicle and is not applicable to motorcycles due to space constraints.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In the present invention, when an incoming call is detected by a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) such as a mobile phone or tablet PC, which is connected with a vehicle through a wireless communication protocol. The communication protocol can be Bluetooth or Wi-Fi or wired communication protocol such as USB. The caller details are transmitted to a speedometer mounted on the vehicle. The speedometer displays the caller information, and the rider can choose to attend or disconnect the call by operating buttons or switches in the vehicle. If the PDA detects that the rider has chosen to disconnect the call, a previously stored message stating that the user is riding a vehicle will be automatically forwarded to the caller by the PDA. If the rider chooses to attend the call, then the PDA will connect the call. The rider can speak to the caller through hands-free microphone and speakers.
The invention can be applied to any two-wheeled or three-wheeled vehicle. The PDA could be a Smartphone or tablet PC. The speedometer could have a dot matrix display device for displaying caller details. The switches for connecting or disconnecting the call could be on the speedometer or handlebar.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Figure 1 shows the system components of this invention.
Figure 2 shows the PDA in the pocket of the rider while driving.
Figure 3 shows the speedometer with alphanumeric display communicating with PDA via Bluetooth. Figure 4 shows the alphanumeric display with the contact person information on receiving a call.
Figure 5 shows the system with a pass-by switch.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Figure 1 shows the components of the system of the present invention. A vehicle mounted speedometer (2) with an alphanumeric display (1) is connected to a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) (5) such as a Smartphone or tablet PC through a Bluetooth (3) communication protocol. A dedicated software application running on the PDA (5) sends incoming call details to the speedometer (2). The speedometer (2) is provided with interface buttons (4) for a rider to respond to the call received. The rider can either connect or disconnect the call using the interface buttons (4). If the rider chooses to disconnect the call, the PDA (5) will sense that the user has pressed the D disconnect button. The call will be disconnected by the PDA, and a previously stored message will be forwarded to the caller informing that the user is driving at the moment. If the rider chooses to connect the call, the PDA (5) will detect that the user has pressed the D connectO button and will connect the call so that the rider can speak to the caller using hands-free microphone and speakers. The hands-free microphone and speakers can be connected to the PDA (5) over the Bluetooth (3) communication. Figure 2 shows the PDA (5) in the pocket of the rider 6 driving a two- wheeler (7). The interface buttons (4) could also be located on the vehicle handlebar so that the rider can respond to the call without removing his/her hands from the handlebar.
Figure 3 shows the speedometer (2) with alphanumeric display communicating with the PDA (5) via Bluetooth (3).
Figure 4 shows the alphanumeric display presenting the contact person details (8) on receiving a call in PDA of the rider (6). The speedometer (2) can additionally have a separate indication to notify the rider if the incoming call is from an emergency number. The emergency contact number is a predetermined contact number which the user has specified as the emergency contact number using the software application in the PDA (5). The software application in the PDA (5) checks if the incoming call is from the emergency contact number and if yes, then the PDA (5) transmits appropriate signals over Bluetooth communication so that the speedometer emergency caller notification (9) will be activated. If the rider chooses to disconnect the call, a previously stored SMS can also be sent to the caller informing that the user is riding the vehicle.
The speedometer (2) could have dot matrix display or LCD or LED or TFT display device. Either interface buttons (4) in the speedometer as in Figure 1 or handle bar mounted switches such as a pass-by switch (10) as in Figure 5 could be used for connecting or disconnecting calls. The number of switches required could further be reduced by sensing the rider operation. A double press of the interface button (4) or a single press on the pass-by switch (10) could trigger the disconnect action. A long press of the interface button (4) or long press of the pass-by switch (10) could trigger the connect action.
Added to the emergency caller notification, a number of missed calls could also be displayed in the speedometer based on the missed calls data transmitted from the PDA through Bluetooth communication.
To further improve rider safety, automatic call blocking could also be implemented which automatically disconnects incoming calls and sends the previously stored message to the caller if the vehicle speed is greater than a predetermined value. For example, if the vehicle speed is greater than lOkmph, an incoming call will be automatically disconnected, and the previously stored message will be sent to the caller. The rider can connect the call only if the vehicle speed is lesser than lOkmph.
These and other modifications are possible without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
